Us VS Them
Okay, these are very rough, figuring each month at 30 days. Also, our stats would be even higher if I included T(A)U, but I wanted to give DN a fighting chance.
DN being 27 months old, and Jacurutu being 7 months old. Here are some averages:
DN = 54.40 Posts per Day
Jacurutu = 95.24 Posts per Day
DN has 979 members, Jacurutu has 160. Obviously this is even looser than the last numbers due to not everyone having been here the same amount of time. Average posts per member:
DN = 44.94
Jacurutu = 125
In conclusion: we post almost twice as much per day, and well over twice as much per member, damn near three times as much actually. Also I think anyone who's seen the level of activity on the DN "off-topic" section compared to Jacurutu's has a pretty good idea of what % of the site's posts are on or off topic.
Pretty much Jacurutu kicks DN’s ass.
EDIT: Someone should go put this up at DN so people know what they're missing.

And, of course, there's no measure for quality of content.
Setting aside Freak, DN is a complete and utter wasteland. When Arnoldo and Hypatia are your "stars," you can be assured of one thing: your "discussions" are going to suck.

I must admit I had no idea things were quite so bad at Dumbnovels. I figured the board content was crap, of course. But I didn't realize it was becoming another Arrakeen. Still, I have a feeling DN will limp on and gasp for a much longer death scene than the other online hole

I'm reminded of Paul Reubens' death scene in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer.GamePlayer wrote:I must admit I had no idea things were quite so bad at Dumbnovels. Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

I don't think it's fair to compare the two so readily...A Thing of Eternity wrote:Okay, these are very rough, figuring each month at 30 days. Also, our stats would be even higher if I included T(A)U, but I wanted to give DN a fighting chance.
For instance the official board has more members, of which only a portion is active on the forum, while Jacurutu has fewer members, but a larger portion of the membership is active on the forum.
DN is older, and after a certain period activities on specialised boards tend to quiet down.
DN is also the official board, which means it'll attract more members.
Jacurutu is specialized, you have to really look for it in order to find it. Typing in "dune" in google won't get you to Jacurutu as easily as it would get you to DN.
Then there is the filtering out of posts, how many threads get derailed here and how many get derailed there?
But yeah... in general Jacurutu is a bit more alive than DN, if only because the most vocal people, the OH, have been driven off the official forum.
Byron tends to cling to the idea that every prequelite is driven off the official forum, but it makes fairly little sense seeing the lack of prequelite activity there. The OH have been banned and censored along the line, and still the prequelites won't come...

What Preeq idiot ever really got run off? Even TAZ bowed out because he probably got tired of having his ass handed to him. He hasn't returned since we were banned, so it's not like we were keeping him away.

This is based on what, exactly? Could you share these mysterious statistics you've seen with the rest of the class?
Here's my experience: good forums retain members (add members, even) and remain healthy for as long as they are fed and watered. Bad forums first become intellectual wastelands before eventually drying up and blowing away. The Internet tends to be self-correcting this way.

And most of the time that is due to a bad or absent administrator, from my experience.TheDukester wrote:What the ... ?Secher Nbiw wrote:DN is older, and after a certain period activities on specialised boards tend to quiet down.

The Empire Vs Dune would be a stalemate. Leto and Muad'dib would ally with them knowing they could outlive the Emperor. The danger of course comes from the fact that the Death Star could Destroy Arrakis, but Muad'dib and Leto could take Palpatine and Darth Vader 1v1.

Dunenovels will live on, as a washed up wreck. It's been lobotomised. What would Frank think when the most active member of his board is a Catholic religious nut?
What a fucking joke.

Update time! 4 Months have passed, so what has changed?
DN being 31 months old, and Jacurutu being 11 months old. Here are some averages (rough figures of course):
DN = 50.48 Posts per Day (down 4 since my first comparison)
Jacurutu = 100.86 Posts per Day (up 5 since first comparison)
DN has 1075 members, Jacurutu has 221 (they're up about 100 members we're up about 60). Average posts per member:
DN = 43.67 (down 1 since last time)
Jacurutu = 150.61 (up 25 since last)
Now, for the real fun, remember that since they are 3 times our age, their averages are much more stable than ours - those losses above represent a much bigger shift down than it looks like they do.
The last 4 months:
Jacurutu total posts = 13300
Jacurutu total posts per day = 110.83
DN total posts = about 2900
DN total posts per day = 24.16
So we've had 4.5 X as many posts as them in the last 4 months.
Conclusion, we're going up, they're going down. Surprised? I though not.
