Odrade and Taraza wait on the rooftop for everyone to arrive and witness a demonstrations of Sheeana’s control over the worms. Taraza tells Odrade that she believes in Leto’s pearls of awareness and Sheeana’s dance is the key to understanding the language of the worms. She hopes to recover Leto’s full plan. Waff, the priests and Sheeana arrive and Waff distances himself from everyone else. They hear thopters approaching and everyone but Taraza goes inside. The first thopter lifts over the roof and a lasbeam from it cuts off Taraza’s legs. Another cuts across her hips and the thopter flys away. Taraza thinks to herself that she has won. Odrade runs out and Shares with Taraza. Odrade and Sheeana escape through an air shaft by holding onto glowglobes. Odrade tells Sheeana that Taraza is dead, she is now temporarily Mother Superior and the attackers were Whores.
