See if you can dip across the border into Wisconsin. Look for New Glarus beers. Awesome brewery and brews.

Yesterday i was watching a live show the monty python did in america years and years ago, and there was a sketch in wich they played the role of australians. Eric Idle said this great joke:
"Your american beer is pretty much like what we see as making love in a canoe. It's too fucking close to water."

I've been doing a little homebrewing this summer, but not as much as I usually do. I'm putting together a english-style brown ale this weekend and I recently kegged an IPA I brewed using nothing but my homegrown hops.

Thang: I sent you a PM, any of that mead ready? Take us a pic and post it here.

As soon as they're finished clearing and aging (I'm bulk aging them in secondary before bottling), I'll post some pics of them in wine glasses. Mmmmm mead. I don't understand why mead dropped out of western culture in the last century, it's fantastic, and the rest of the world seems to still be drinking the stuff.

I'm planning on doing a Dune inspired spice coffe mead, bottles may or may not end up as presents to certain prominent Dune forum members.

I've come up with a name for this brew. Since it will be Dune inspired, featuring much cardamom and cinnamon spicing, as well as all the other spices (and of course black tea) that go into making Chai tea, it will be named in honour of Shai Hulud.

This mead will be called:

Chai Hulud

as an aside, I was just thinking the other day about why the heck FH would call the spice melange, which I believe is just "mixture" in french. I've puzzled about that for years, but I wonder if it was a hint about the flavour - because the indian word for melange/mixture is masala... and chai masala is the spice mixture that goes into chai tea. Bit of a stretch perhaps, but considering that the spice is supposed to smell/taste like cinnamon (a key component of chai masala) and spice coffee is roasted with cardamom (a key component of chai masala), maybe not so much of a stretch. Don't know why I put so much thought into that, but melange has allways struck me as a totally odd name for the spice, and this is the only thing I can think of that could explain why FH used the term, he wanted to make people think of chai masala (or maybe garam masala or other masala), but didn't want to be so obvious, so he went with the french?

I'm sure Chig will kick my ass for this rant when he gets off work... :D

EDIT: I see he's actually online now, I might not have to wait so long for my asskicking!

(The mélange musings sound interesting, good to me. I've wondered why he used the French word, but never really tried to make connections. No whompass here for now. ;) )

(Afterthought: I'll look through the texts later, but isn't there something about the spice always tasting different to the people who take it sporadically for the geriatric effect? Maybe there's also a nuance of the taste being a "mixture" of other similar, remembered tastes? Just specooolatin'! :) )
