It has been really slow for me lately. I posted today that it was extremly slow all day long.
Here is what I get now. Anyone know what this means? Looks like it cant draw the board anymore, or a SQL (db) error.

Ah...I see it, too, now.
Hmmm. I, too, was thinking on the drive down, that I really hoped they were backing things up.
It would be a shame to deprive posterity of the stupidity that was The Almighty Zeus.
The rest of the site seems OK, though.
Didn't Byron post something over there about them updating something a while back? I figure that's when the ban settings got whacked and I could view it again from home. It may be a problem with the new version of the boardware or...worst case, it could have been a cracker.
Byron: Tell Mike to go through and check the last-time-modified timestamps on all the files in the BBS directory (a lot of work, I know, so start with the main ones in the top directory, like index.php. tail.php looks suss from the error messages). If any of the files have been modified since the last time he changed things, you've found the problem.
If you have updated the boardware recently, there may be an incompatibility with the theme that has taken its time coming out.
FWIW.
AFTERTHOUGHT:
Byron: Also have Mike check to see if that old anti-spam code (SPAM_KILL_IT) I sent you is still in the files. I can't find a copy of what I sent you on the machine I'm on now, and I don't really think it's the problem, but have him look just the same. I can't remember if it used die() or message_die(). Maybe someone posted something that made it run amok? Anyway, I REPEAT, I don't think it's the problem, especially after all this time, but best to have him check, all the same.

I just had a look around the phpBB forums and it appears the problem can be caused by an upgrade of the boardware.
Byron: Tell Mike to have a look there for various suggestions on what to look at and try to fix the problem.

Is it still down?
I just tried here from home again and I get the "You've been banned..." message, same as this morning.
That's actually a good sign, for what it's worth:
It means the boardware is still working AND the database is still intact enough to know I'm persona non grata.

message_die() was called multiple times. This isn't supposed to happen. Was message_die() used in page_tail.php?

If the problem is chaos created as a result of trying to add some mod, and its been down this long, then I suspect that they have not backed up the board recently. Otherwise at this point they would have just said "Screw it! Go with the archived version."
Or maybe some evil hacker added some modification that they dont understand, and cant even get onto the thing to try to fix it.

I don't get what the hold-up is.
IF Mike was keeping proper backups of the database, it should be easy enough to get it back online. (Hints: There was mention on the phpBB boards of several database update & repair commands to run; try those. If the database can't be fixed quickly, change the name and set it aside for analysis. Reinstall the latest version of the software you know worked OK, create a new database with the old db name and fill it from the latest pre-update backup [hopefully kept]. A week or two of posts will be in limbo for a while, but they may be retrievable from the current db, which was set aside. THAT's what I would try doing, at least, but keep in mind that I'm not a pro at these things...like I assume Mike is.)
IF he hasn't been keeping backups of the database (and old copies of those) and can't repair the current one (only parts of which may be messed up: obviously the banned IP address table is fine
), it's fucked.
NOT to make light of the misfortune of others, but Teg and I talked on the phone around lunchtime yesterday and kinda wondered if this wouldn't be a great way of disposing of a lot of unfavorable material that was still on the board.
If Byron or someone else were to, say, start deleting threads, people would eventually notice and complain. But if there's a database failure and backups weren't kept ... whoops! oh well, too bad, what? Sure, a lot of stuff will be in the search engine caches for a while, but eventually it'll be replaced and disappear. New board, new content, stricter controls than before, WELCOME TO DUNE WORLD! Everything nice and happy looking for the new book series and upcoming movie!

We get our chuckles from conspiracy theories like this.
