also - Does anyone know if any other group of people interested in high-quality lit, and aware of Frank Herbert's Dune series, have any reservations on the quality of writing in the new books? Groups unrelated to Jacurutu? Had some lively discussions this weekend with some friends about this, and it was awesome! (got 2 copies of Dune and DM into their hands, and steered them away from the new stuff when they asked which Dune books they should read first - I let them know my point of view and did not discourage them from reading the new stuff if they felt the need, but did recommend they do the library thing first, before they decide to spend money on anything knowing my friends, I'm pretty sure which way they'll swing)

I haven't found any other group discussing the quality of the new Dune books (just odd things here and there), but KJA has a large following of people who hate his guts because of what he did to the Starwars universe earlier in his carreer. Apparently it took other authors entire series' just to retcon as much of what he screwed up as possible. They hate him more or less as much as we do as far as I can tell.

well there are similarities in some of their "stories", and I can easily picture someone with Keith's ego revelling in the mindless admiration of cultists...
There is more to this though, and as Chig said we have a specialist here(try to search scientology in the board's search engine you might get lucky)

cool - thanks! I'll totally check Mr. Teg's info out. I've always looked on L. Ron with fascination - the fact that he talked to other SF writers about the 'real' way to get rich, via starting a religion, then actually doing it years later! Crazy like a fox. And maybe a little bit more crazy besides , but still, the man really steamrolled over society and created something that's stuck around, however questionable it may be... unreal. Kinda like KJA coming out of nowhere and making bank on another dude's legacy... and creating another kind of (more specialized) societal steamroller - imagine if these guys had used their powers for good, rather than evil?

Every search engine on the internet has member status on the board. Some use bots to build up their own proprietary archives. A bot is a program that goes out and seeks info. When you see it there that means that Yahoo is updating the archives it maintains to increase search speed, or possibly because a specific search is going on and our borad has content that is responsive to that search. Google uses bots too.

Although they are technically "members," they are invisible until they enter the board to search it, and then are only visible in the spot you saw them.
