This quote from the beginning of DUNE suggests the idea of mutated Navigators was there from the beginning. Maybe he forgot about it when he was writing the last chapter and remembered it while he was preparing DUNE: MESSIAH.FH in Dune wrote:"I'm going to watch our screens and try to see a Guildsman."
