because it is part of the normal course of human relations
I am old fashionned and I like people to be polite, you wouldn't barge into a conversation in a group of people you don't know just like that would you?
I know I wouldn't, there are few rules on the interwebz but this one is common to all decent boards I am on(three including this one)
A welcome ritual as you call it is what separates humans from trolls
Call it an online gom jabbar if you like

I personally feel that this message board, Jacurutu, is full of hateful folks who don't know
how to fully interact with people. ~ "Spice Grandson" (Bryon Merrit) 08 June 2008

TBH, it was the first time I posted a "Hi, I'm new" topic on a forum. Maybe I'm too much "modern-fashioned", but I find such topics pretty useless. The simple rule I (usually) try to follow is, post only if you think you'll contribute to the discussion; if in doubt, don't post. So basically what a person says in actual conversation(s) is more telling about this person than anything they might tell about themselves in a welcome thread.
But maybe my whole attitude to this comes from the fact that I'm generally quite a reserved person.
WHAT IF YOU NO LONGER HEAR THE MUSIC OF LIFE?
MEMORIES ARE NOT ENOUGH UNLESS THEY CALL YOU TO NOBLE PURPOSE!
lol.. there's no rule at this site (or any site I've ever joined) that says you must introduce yourself before posting anywhere else on the board. If there was, I think I might delete my bookmark and never come back. Relax, it's just the internet.
I don't even bother to tell the noobs hello anymore in the introductions forum. It's just "+1" anyway.
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hypatia approaches one.

Yeah, I think it was just his turn over the barrel.

anarchy huh?
Like that
I dunno I have my views about this intro stuff and I won't change them, but in the end it all turned out all right didn't it?
I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert
