Those are actually considered a fairly classic set of rules. Believe it or not, the game does a great job of making the players feel like they are a part of the early parts of the Dune saga (the setting, for those who might care, is in the time directly following the Atreides family's relocation to Arrakis).

Here's another perspective: the BoardgameGeek database contains well over 10,000 games. Dune is currently ranked 59th by the users of the site.

The French editor

old school board games and paper RPGs from my younger years, does bring back some memories thanks

Yeah, the French edition is highly sought-after by North American collectors. It included the basic game, plus both expansion sets (which can be hard to find separately). The graphics are generally considered to be very attractive, too.

A good friend of my brother's, Ryan Macklin, who is a big gaming blogger, recommends a game called Jihad. Ive read throug the game book. It's based loosely on Dune.
