A discussion folder for the Dune Encyclopedia
While I know its been stated by most and is not considered canon, thought might be nice to have its own folder. There is ass load of information in there.
I had bought a mint condition Book Club version a while ago, and have kept it wrapped up and sealed. Yesterday while at half price books store, came across a hard cover version without dust jacket, for 5 bucks. Books in perfect condition, but am using as a reader/reserarch copy.
I never got around to reading whole thing so am reading some now and starting my run of a reread of the original six again.
I have read the passages on the main characters including the God Emperor, very interesting if anything. The DE claims to be information from the Dar-es-Balat.. and thats fine, easy way to cover the creation of many of the things in the book.
Its better reading than the twits books for sure.

That much has never been in doubt.trang wrote:Its better reading than the twits books for sure.

As a labor of true love, how could it be less?

Re: A discussion folder for the Dune Encyclopedia
I have already posed a question about the Bene Gesserit in another part of the forum (perhaps the mods should move it here?)
I am reading through the DE while incorporating it in the Dune wiki. It's very impressive and it's obvious that the contributors were experts in various themes (language, astronomy, sciences etc). Even the language is scholarly and realistic (in-universe) and a bit "difficult" for me.
Also, there are minor internal inconsistencies eg. concerning the marriage of Shaddam IV and Anuril. Obviously this is because of the number of the contributors. However the "expanded" universe as described there is cohesive nd largely consistent.
Recently I was reading about the Battle of Corrin and the Sardaukar. Their origins and connections are hinted, but remain vague. If you read only the Battle of Corrin entry, you will understand that the first emperor was the leader of a rebel house against the others. If you read only the Sardaukar entry, you will undertand that the battle was an assault of Salusans (Sardaukar) against the Landsraad.
Since the first emperor was allied to Atreides and Harkonnens, perhaps they too descent from Salusa Secundus
I don't know if these vague points are clarified in another entry.
PS. The Sardaukar as described in the DE remind too much of the Mandalorians

Where would you suggest we put it?

Too right.trang wrote:Its better reading than the twits books for sure.
Any given passage of the DE (I like to read them out of order, semi-randomly) will be roughly 10 times more entertaining than anything Hacky or Bobo could ever dream of writing.
(Not to mention 100 times more informative)
"Anything I write will be remembered and listed in bibliographies on Dune for several hundred years ..." — some delusional halfwit troll.

I think it should get it's own heading under "Dune Discussion". The BH/KJA stuff does.
Also Trang, I'll trade you my Paperback for your Jacketless one.

I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson
We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert
There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert

Well ... I don't know about that, exactly. I mean, I keep thinking 'thopter clams and Ecaz not being settled until several thousand years after humankind goes into space ... when it's essentially around the corner.TheDukester wrote:(Not to mention 100 times more informative)

100 times more well-written and entertaining, definitely.

Omph, I'm having trouble with this PC at home, for some reason the Forum section of the Admin Control Panel isn't working. Probably because this damned machine wont update to SP3 or IE8.
Can you make a DE forum under Dune Discussion?

Have you considered combining some of the other forums? The board is pretty cluttered as it is.
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hypatia approaches one.

Make sure to run a back-up first, in case you dont like it. I run one automatically every weekend, but it may miss some posts depending on when you switch the forums around.Freakzilla wrote:Yes, I was thinking of comining all the faction forums into one.Mandy wrote:Have you considered combining some of the other forums?
