Everyone please read, lurkers and posters alike
I'm going to go through and clean out all the spammers from the memberlist, so if I don't know you and you either have a spammy name or the word "gold" in your URL and you dont want to get the boot accidentally, please either PM me or post here and let me know that you are in fact a human and not a bot.
No need to stop lurking if that is what you want to do; a PM will do, or even an offsite e-mail (that was just a joke, my email always has been working).
Thanks.

If kja really wanted to take a swipe at Chig that's what he'd do, but we know he doesn't have the nacnuds for it.Omphalos wrote:Wouldn't it be funny if the Muadru are sentient insects?SandChigger wrote:Sentient insectoid!
(First one brings up "no sentient aliens in the Duniverse" gets bumped to the top of the shit list. You've been warned.)
Also, this thread has now been hijacked.

Of course you may. But you were already at the top of the list, so no change.
Kidding!
Actually, yes, I do remember reading that thread. Sad that it died out in just three days. But what can you expect when you sow seed in barren soil?
Did you ever find that quote you mention (BG mental workings?) from the latter books? The one from CoD where Leto muses/remembers(?) the sandtrout being brought to a water planet is the really convincing one that we've talked about. But if he's really remembering something through OM, that means some human ancestor of his was present, at least as a witness.
I'm not yet convinced of the need to invoke intelligent aliens as the culprits. Could have been some wide-ranging human culture who discovered the worms and brought sandtrout back to a suitable planet closer to human space. Or someone experimenting with planet-killer bioweapons. Who knows.
(I think the "for use against possible aliens" line was just the excuse the Great Houses gave for keeping their nukes.)

Most of threads which demanded real discussion usually died over there, which pretty much constituted most of the threads I made. Most of them were half-hearted, really, but it's always nice to argue things you don't necessarily believe in (female KHs, remember).
I don't own any of the Dune books (blasphemy!), so I can't flip through them as I please. In any case, I overlooked simple things like there having to be a human to witness the event. Sometimes you think you found something, but really you haven't. (I was reading the appendixes and I thought I found PROOF that the BJ wasn't Terminator style, but after reading it through like ten times I realized I was mistaken
).
I'll take it as a dead discussion, since there's not enough in-book or real-world evidence for real aliens being possible.

and yes, that's the way it's always been in my mind:
the sandtrout (not worms, but the trout) were brought to Dune
long before the rest of us knew WTF was going on. And I'll go farther
and say it was LONG before the First Jihad ....

It couldn't have taken all that long if the BG did it on Chapterhouse in a relatively short time period.Baraka Bryan wrote:I like to imagine them as an experiment gone wrong... a group of humans who had these little fish-like trout (either developed, or genetically altered) and take them to a water planet to see what happens... the things suck up water like no tomorrow so they dump a bunch in the ocean to see what happens..... it takes a long time and eventually that group gives up on the experiment but eventually the water reserves all become encapsulated and the trout de-terraform the planet to their liking and evolve to develop the spice cycle etc... eventually growing into sandworms ... a completely unforseen event.
