would you, Sir, care to refute any or all of the points I've raised here ?SandRider wrote:I've held my tongue on this Rush thing. But here's the argument I've being spewing for, oh, 25 years or more .....
Putting forth YYZ or Red Barchetta as an example, Neil Pert is/was the best drummer in rock music. Period.
Putting forth any piece, Geddy Lee is/was the best bassist in rock music. Period.
Alex ain't too shabby, neither, but he is the weak link, excepting Geddy's voice, which, like Willie, you either love or hate.
Considering the music, then, arrangements & themes, lyrical complexities, &etc, with the sheer technical musical talent, I'll submit that Rush is, in fact, THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME.

I like me some Rush, too, no doubt. And I admire their skillz, which are phenomenal ... BUT.
But, now, I have to take a deep breath before I play any of their stuff, reminding myself that it shouldn't matter that the drummer and Kevin J. Anderson like to hold hands:
http://www.dunenovels.com/dune7blog/page20.html
(near the bottom; it's just one of many of KJA's name-dropping Rush posts)
I just try to remind myself that Peart is a hell of a drummer ... with absolutely shit taste in friends. Once I do that, I'm usually fine.

Which was kind of my point: he was hired to polish it, so if it was awful, then we'd have something to cry about. Since the reviews are mixed, it's more likely (if we're talking extremes) that he turned a turd into an okay movie than that he turned a really good script into a piece of mediocrity - they wouldn't want to end up filming a worse script, after all.GamePlayer wrote:EsperandoAGodot
Reviews for Quantum of Solace have been mixed. But without knowing the specifics of Zetumner's contributions he's pretty much in the clear no matter what happens with the final product. He could have been responsible for the good parts or the bad parts, or had a mix of the two. It's like the ideal KJA situation
But as these things usually go, the script was probably in good shape, and so long as we know Zetumer didn't ruin it, we can at least have that much confidence in him.
Frankly - and maybe it's just because I'm a writer - I'm more afraid of Berg than Zetumer.

This is true. The writer is shit upon in the Hollywood studio system. You get more respect as the bitch intern playing gopher on set than as the screenwriter. If you ever want to feel like shit, become a screenwriter, because you'll never suffer from a shortage of abuse of your work

I'm afraid of Berg as well, so far he's risen the hollywood ladder of bile through action movies, seeing him take on a project like Dune i expect to see something resembling Faust having a showdown with the Devil using miniguns and frag grenades.EsperandoAGodot wrote:Which was kind of my point: he was hired to polish it, so if it was awful, then we'd have something to cry about. Just because that isn't "Faust," doesn't mean that wouldn't be awesome to watch.Seraphan wrote:I'm afraid of Berg as well, so far he's risen the hollywood ladder of bile through action movies, seeing him take on a project like Dune i expect to see something resembling Faust having a showdown with the Devil using miniguns and frag grenades.

Well, what can be good about the movie?
1. The Weirding Way is more likely to be translated as a martial art in this one (especially since The Matrix entered the scene).
2. I'm sure the Eyes of the Ibad won't be glowing. At the very least contacts like those used in the CoD mini could be used so that subtle expressions can be made by the actors.
3. Because of the high respect of the CoD soundtrack I'm sure something in that vein will probably be used rather than Toto (though some of their tracks were good and memorable

4. Hollywood prob wouldn't have painted backdrops in this one.
5. They should know what did and didn't work with the other adaptations and know what to avoid (hopefully).
6. Less hats and less hair (crosses fingers!).
Then again, Berg could make Dune (Star) Wars since that seems to be what he has been talking about in interviews. It also doesn't help that BH & KJA will have some involvement so there's bound to be something screwy with how the plot and its philosophies are handled.

True, and I think we can keep that in mind. Hell, it could be faithful and still be muscular - since any adaptation is a process of selection, it's a matter of what you select. In fact the other day I plotted the entire movie out "hanging the story" on personal shields and their use, figuring out how to tell the story through action sequences...Tleszer wrote:Just because that isn't "Faust," doesn't mean that wouldn't be awesome to watch.![]()
The biggest plot device in Equilibrium, for example, was gun kata. That movie sucked, though...
Hopefully it's just really impressive martial arts and not like it was in the miniseries...Tleszer wrote:Well, what can be good about the movie?

Better contacts. Dark blue in dark blue. How hard can it be? I mean they made Paul's eyes all black in the miniseries, which is apparently what the Guildsmen's eyes looked like at the end of Dune...Tleszer wrote:2. And since a lot of it has been done before, they're more likely to try new things.Tleszer wrote:5. They should know what did and didn't work with the other adaptations and know what to avoid (hopefully).
I made a similar list the other day...hm... ::rummages through computer files:: Ah, here it is:
1) Ornithopters with mobile wings, that actually fit the definition of the word "ornithopter."
2) That one Baron floats in the movie may be an interpretation and a creative choice. That both Barons in both movies float represents a misreading. The Baron is said to carry most of his weight on suspensors, the implication being that he walks around, but is too morbidly obese to walk around without decreasing his weight through antigravity.
3) Swords and knives. Hand to hand melee fighting is so much cooler to watch than gun combat, so why won't anyone just follow the books and have large scale melee combat instead of giving everyone guns. Weirding is a martial art, too. No blur effect super fast movement beyond what may actually be physically possible; Matrix fighting sans bullet time.
Further: the Fremen do use guns, and are good at it. Fremen gun kata, anyone?
4) No one sees Guild Navigators. Let's not see them, either.
5) Solid blue eyes that don't glow. How hard is that, really? In the Children of Dune miniseries, when Paul's eyes go entirely black from the stone-burner (how does that translate to being burned out?) that's closer to what extreme spice addiction looks like than glowing blue eyes.
6) The Voice has to not sound like a robot/demon voice. C'mon.
7) Let's not shy away from the Baron's pederasty.
The Fremen are space-Arabs. Deal with it.
