To be fair, the "Epic sequel to Dune" thing may not be the HLP's idea at all, but some marketing weenie at Hodder Stoughton and/or Tor. They probably don't even need HLP buy-in to pull something like that.

Not that it disgusts me any less. And I think the renumbering thing might be a real possibility if PoD can be Dune's sequel.

I think the UK cover has cleared up any confusion. Dune Messiah was just the sequel to Dune, whilst Paul of Dune is the EPIC sequel to Dune, no less. Poor old Dune Messiah, relegated to just being a plain old sequel.

Their previous work has shown they get progessivly worse with each book, and the liberties with the storyline are so outrageously bad, that this next "Epic Wedgy" will show their true colors.

They are really diving in all hamfists forward tackling Paul, I fairly confident it will be the Ultimate disaster for them, combine that with their "influence" on a new dune film, and maybe well see the end to the disaster.

One thing I just noticed about this series that might be interesting:

Simon & Schuster UK has also contracted for our next three DUNE novels -- JESSICA OF DUNE, IRULAN OF DUNE, and LETO OF DUNE.

The Dune series' traditional publisher in the UK has been Gollancz/Hodder & Stoughton for hardcovers, NEL/Hodder for paperbacks. I think I'm right in saying that these are actually the same company, just publishing under different imprints at different times. There may have been some acquisitions as well, I suppose.

Now, I think Hunters, Sandworms and PoD were sold to Hodder as a 3-book deal, so the latter three "heroes" books were up for grabs. I wonder why Hodder didn't take them, after being the Dune publisher for over 30 years?

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I suspect perhaps these books aren't selling as well in the UK either. I'd like to think that the publishing company actually cares about FH's legacy, given they have a long history with the man, but realistically it probably comes down to dollars. Or pounds.

From Kevin's latest blog on MySpace, it appears that he and Brian are shooting (oh...oh...oh...ungh!) for a September 2009 release of Jes' Icky Dung.

Evidently they recently came together and pumped out the details. Writing to start in August. (?!?)

You may remember that originally they were going to take a year off between "Heroes" books and work on the books of their new, original (snicker) Smellhole series. I guess this means there is some problem or delay there.

Or maybe it's that the "A 'Dune' book a year" habit is just too hard to break?

Either way, there'll be shit in the air as usual. I'm psyched!

By a factor of 10, I'd guess ... if not considerably more.

Which is both satisfying (proof that KJA can only write bad fanfic in other people's universes) and sad (proof that putting the words "Dune"and "Herbert" on a cover is enough to get the mouth-breathers to buy) at the same time.
