I'm going to start calling myself a "sane-ist", since "centerist" doesn't really describe me (I believe in a balance, but not so much a balance through moving towards center all the time, often I think the extremes of either side are right... and also often wrong...).

Re: Occupy Protests
Not a bad video, actually. By the end of it, seemed like Schiff was only ripping on their protest for being misrepresented by the media, which is silly of him. Hipster at 13:45 kind of nails it: The protest is as much a protest of Washington as it is of Wall St. Another good moment: right at the end when the dude asks for a show of hands of pro-capitalist protestors. "That's a lot of hands," he says.Nekhrun wrote:This is the way:Omphalos wrote:I tried to fix it, but Nekh is right. But look at what i did. That's the way.
Though I don't support the contents of the video (for no reason other than I didn't watch it yet). I tend towards Crysknife's view on these issues and I would describe myself as a Socialist.
Which basically sums up how I feel about it: reform, rather than revolution. Although if reform can't happen...

What all these pricks seem to forget is that they're only rich because of the education and labor of those they exploit. Do they think they'd have a workforce without public education? What about healthy enough to work for an entire career without the regulations that make certain we have clean air/water/food? They sure don't seem to avoid the resources of the commons. As Berlin noted: "No man's activity is so completely private as never to obstruct the lives of others in any way. 'Freedom for the pike is death for the minnows'."
No one is self-made...no one. They really do owe it to the workers to share the wealth.

Re: Occupy Protests
The media lost interest when it ran out of ugly images or a decent (invented) narrative. Peaceful protests are crap telly.

Occupy Congress is on the 17th. I doubt the media will give it much coverage... the Golden Globes are tonight, and I'm sure Ricky will piss some celebrities off and that's so much more important.

Where's Ralph Steadman when you need him? The ugliness which has surrounded the Occupy Protests seems worthy of a Fear and Loathing treatment from HST's infamous ink-crazy sidekick.

Re: Occupy Protests
I was a little underwhelmed by the #J17 protests at Congress, was quieter than expected with only a few thousand showing up. But the subsequent #J18 SOPA/PIPA protests & Supreme Court protests have been surprisingly impressive. I'm hoping this is simply the new standard: more engagement.
Also, I've heard lots of critics of OWS say that they should be rallying in Washington, not Wall St. They had a good point, but I'm hoping last week's events helped them understand OWS acknowledges this. Never mind the fact that Occupy K St & Occupy DC have been going strong since October. Anyway, lobbyists & the industries that hire them deserve criticism along with Congress, especially if narrow corporate interests always win.

Was slightly surprising how well some of the traditional big bads (Soros and the IMF) come off in it, but that might be because they have more of an interest in shaping the bigger picture as opposed to covering their behinds at an operational level. But it was a quote at near the end that summed up what I was thinking all the way through:
"Why should a financial engineer be paid 4 times to a 100 times more than a real engineer?"
Difficult jobs should be rewarded, but fuck me, those people live in a weird little self-perpetuating bubble world!
Definitely recommended viewing

Re: Occupy Protests
I know this topic is not continuing at the moment, but I thought that this quote from GOG.com's editorial on ODDWORLD: ABE'S EXODDUS would be of some interest to the Occupy Protest debate. The Creative Director of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning, references a little bit to the political and economical state of things.
http://www.gog.com/en/news/editorial_od ... es_exoddus
The anti-industrial oppression point of view of ODDWORLD is also elaborated on in the first game's editorial.
