The Best Album of All Time.
I'd like to nominate Davis Bowie's 1972 masterpiece Aladdin Sane as the single best album of all time, the song writing, emotional content and performances are second to none.
Now I'm not deluded enough to think anyone will agree with me on this one, so feel free to suggest your own.

Dookie by Green Day is my personal favorite, but for "greatest" it's got to be Sgt. Peppers, Abbey Road, or Revolver...

No way to answer this question. If you have a heart, it changes every once on a while. That being said, Exile on Main Street is up there. So is The King is Dead by The Decemberists, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, Funeral, by arcade Fire, etc., ect., etc.
Whatever my "favorite album" is ceases to be my favorite as I eventually listen to it to much.

On the other hand, I don't listen to a lot of jazz, so I don't think I know how to appreciate it yet, if you know what I mean.

Sergeant Pepper's
Dark Side of the Moon
Impossible to choose one. Even if I did it would be for personal reasons and not a best overall.

Get off the fence you pussies, make a choice and link to your favourite track (or not), this ain't a court of law I'll not hold you to a transient call, and remember, if you choose not to decide you still have had a choice.

Hmmmm. Good list Robbo, until ya threw in a greatest hits album. I usually buy greatest hits albums of bands I like, but I doubt I could sign off on naming an album made to fill Space (and wallets) between real releases on my best of list. I grew up listening to a lot of it because my dad was so into it. There's definitely better choices for jazz novices. I'm kind of surprised that you aren't into it. You strike me as someone who would like it and get a lot from it.SadisticCynic wrote:^Always had a hard time trying to get into Kind of Blue actually.

Nope, listen to them almost every day. House of pain is in my daily playlist. Poison, they are fun. We do some cover songs in my band.Omphalos wrote:Dude, you totally forgot about Faster Pussycat. And Poison.Crysknife wrote:Fuck dat.....I'm gonna lay it down. Slippery when wet, Bon Jovi.

Re: The Best Album of All Time.
I'm young and weird enough to avoid the music threads, but I do appreciate a good album the listens well as an album rather than a collection of tracks. I want to preface this with the fact that the album, a collection of songs by an artist or group, is a very recent concept, historically. I listen to a lot of classical, and a majority of what isn't, my iTunes is best-of's rather than albums. Here then, are some of my selections of "I can listen to this whole album straight through without skipping.Omphalos wrote:No way to answer this question. Re: The Best Album of All Time.
Didn't we have a discussion about the "concept album" around here not long ago?

Re: The Best Album of All Time.
I almost universally prefer it this way. I don't think it needs to be a concept album to do this either.but I do appreciate a good album the listens well as an album rather than a collection of tracks.
The only two jazz albums I own at the moment are Kind of Blue, and Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. I find the latter much easier to get into; I guess it's just a bit catchier is all. I do listen to the Miles Davis one, just not as often.Omphalos wrote:I grew up listening to a lot of it because my dad was so into it. There's definitely better choices for jazz novices. Re: The Best Album of All Time.
Dave Brubeck is a lot easier to get into. During that phase of his career, Miles Davis remade the face of jazz every time he put an album out, and most still have not caught up with him. You should try Stan Getz too. The stuff he did with Joachim Gilberto is very good, IMHO.

The Who Greatest Hits - The Who

I agree Omph, but notice the personal attachments, that is why I said the Greatest Hits as opposed to Live at Leeds, it just happens to have a stronger emotional element, for me, than the others even if they are better albums.

Re: The Best Album of All Time.
Seems like a pretty personal topic.
If mass appeal is a factor, I'd vote for Dark Side of the Moon. Talk about a 40 year old album that has aged well.
Of personal interest, I'd say U2's Unforgettable Fire. Maybe Whiskeytown's Starngers Almanac, Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne or The Decemberist's The Crane Wife. Sorry, no head bangin' here.
