Good day everyone, I am James. I have been a big Dune fan since I discovered the franchise via Dune II (the Westwood Studios computer game) in 1993 when I was a child. I started reading the novels shortly after.
I got through Dune and Dune Messiah rather quickly, eventually got to Children of Dune, and did not actually finish the series until around 2000 (I read the final three in quick succession during University).

I read the "Prelude" series in 01-02, and thought it was okay. I did despise the revisionism in bringing in "no ship" technology long before it had actually existed in the original series, as well as axlotl tanks; it stunk of lack of creativity. I also felt the character development was sorely lacking. I was more or less entertained otherwise, but I will never re-read these books.

I decided to read the "Legends" books and found them to be putrid swill. The only reason I went on to finish them was I wanted to see how the writers decided to handle the the legendary Harkonnen betrayal. It was such a let down I felt like hurling the book out the window.

Anyway, so I have re-read the original Dune several times, but I have yet to re-read the series from start to finish. I have started this recently and found this forum in the meantime. It looks to be a solid community of Herbert fans with great insights.

So I want to get a sense of the geographic distribution of membership. I'm interested to know where everyone is from:

There must be some people with that "speech impediment," but I've never even heard the so called accent before. I was on vacation once when a fat-ass tried making fun of the "Long Island accent" by pronouncing it "Lon Gai-land."

I wonder if that was the moment I discovered that I hated morons.

You bet I did, and I imagine you are the same Sandchigger as the admin on that page. My rereading of the series has made me want to discuss the series with a community ( my wife is not a sci-fi reader and many of my friends have never read Dune).

Did you check out my post on the official dune facebook site? I am surprised its administrator has not deleted it yet (considering the history of how dissenters are treated by the "official dune" folks.

This got me curious to check, and its gone. There were even some McDune fans who tried to rebutt me, and I gave an even handed response. I guess the Herbert Descendency and its group of lackies does not like meaningful discussions and criticism.

Edit: In fact I am no longer even able to post on its wall. It's sad because my opinion was not vitriolic, and would be considered by most reasonable people to be constructive in nature.

Hmm, interesting... surely my college roommate would have said something to me considering he often enough tried to find what words my "accent" altered. I only admit to "coffee" and "quarter." Actually, I did cringe whenever I heard a classmate say "soder" and the like.

I'm not too far from Garden City. Maybe Lynbrook is special... or maybe I just tried harder because I needed a speech therapist when I was younger. Yes, I know , but it was because I had constant ear infections before the age of 5. Apparently it's hard to speak properly if you don't quite hear well enough.
