Doing research on Dune, need help!

Oh ... COME ON!!! ... there is like a thousand million letters in such a thing we call book. Why not just take the fast lane, ask for some relevant words and call it Dune. Why bother with things like quality or research? It is not like something we haven't seen before since Bobo met TehKJA and the NuDune.

I'll probably make the game one of these days with your information and refine the abilities after I finish the book. If I have free time, I prefer to spend it making the game than reading the book, so it gets second in priorities. It will be done before the game gets a final version!

I am more of a fantasy fan, though I definitely like sci-fi as well. I am interested in Dune, every friend I talked with about it was ecstatic and did nothing but prompt me to read it.

Still, it feels unconfortable being forced to read a book with a deadline, instead of taking my time to enjoy it whenever I feel like it. At the same time I need to keep notes while reading and try to brainstorm instead of paying attention to the book. I would enjoy the book a lot better if I got more help here and read it after I was finished with my game.

So if you continue not helping me, you force me to enjoy the book less, which makes you additionally negative towards me and helping me less, which forces my hand even more. A perfect loop

Tip #2: There's nothing gamers like more than not having fun. You're on the right track and this should really shine through in the finished product. Whenever I'm about to share something for thousands to see I make sure what's fun about it has been eliminated.

I see that I was exaggerating. Let me phrase myself better:
"I will be reading for research first, fun second"

Yes, there is an immerse feeling of fun and fulfillment when you create something out of nothing and it needs to be fun for others in order for it to be successful. Likewise, there is lots of fun in reading amazing books (I love Discworld and Dresden Files, for example).

If I was reading the book for leisure it would be more enjoyable, don't you agree?

Still, the creation of a game (allow me to quote a phrase I read once) "is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration". I have a whole lot of work ahead of me, and research is but a small part.

I could skip research by making the game generic fantasy, where humans, dwarves, elves and orcs are in a valley gathering crystals. Or theme it after Avatar: the Movie and human companies gathering Unobtainium.

However, I didn't choose the Dune theme, the game's mechanics chose it. I see it in my mind as the perfect representation of the world of Dune, however little I know it.

That is exactly what you're doing. You've got a list of names, just switch them, as I'm sure you've done on every other game you've worked on. Your process, which doesn't involve any real interest in the material, guarantees that they're all going to be generic.
