shrugging
anyone else noticed how much Herbert uses the word 'shrug'? I'm picturing all these events in my mind as I read but when I see that someone shrugged I can't imagine it in the Dunvironment. Such an emphasis on the practiced and graceful motions of the bene gesserit and so many of the main characters experts at controlling their muscles and reactions and they're shrugging? It's an odd thing, the shrug, something I never really see people do but Herbert must've lived in a shrug heavy area. I've been noticing it throughout all the books and now that I'm on Chapterhouse and I've seen the word used even more it's made an impression. Have we lost that part of ourselves that shrugged often? Or will we rediscover it in the future? Was Herby a habitual shrugger?
anyone noticed anything else like that just doesn't seem to fit? and no the Brian Herbert books don't count.

Re: shrugging
Some form of "shrug" occurs 123 times in the 6 Dune books.
The most (41) are in Dune itself, followed by 27 in Children and 23 in God Emperor. Messiah has only 13, Heretics one less than that, and Chapterhouse has the fewest with only 7 occurrences.
Who knew? (shrugs)

Eh, every author has favorite words, or words they can't escape using.
Like David Weber and "grin".
Or KJA and "Ultra".
Or our KJA reviews and "sucked"

I wonder if it's because he was so into conveying information through minor detail and inference that he threw in a lot of non-verbal cues. I can think of some authors who could learn something from that.

Not to mention Stephen Donaldson and the word "clench", which inspired the game of Clench Racing.

I'm still very proud of The Quarry but … let's face it; in the end the real best way to sign off would have been with a great big rollicking Culture novel.

Oh. Oops. Sorry.
Well... it's not like it's a major spoiler: I didn't include who shrugs, when and why.

Nope, you ruined it for him.

Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

I shrug, sometimes I shrug when I read something on the internet without thinking that no one can see me shrugging.

When I hear about people shrugging it makes me shrug (sometimes just in my head), kind of a meta-shrug.Mandy wrote:I shrug, sometimes I shrug when I read something on the internet without thinking that no one can see me shrugging.
I wonder if it's possible to do an ultra- or mega-shrug.

Re: shrugging
I bet TheKJA could manage an ultra-shrug!
But let's not tempt him... he might strain something in the attempt and accidentally shit out a whole new McDune trilogy.

Lol amazing. Didn't know you could wear a shrug. Excellent research, sir!trang wrote:Guess should be dressed for the shrug when it comes:

I was just reading Chapterhouse and came across two shrugs on the same page, wow what an event! Odrade was looking at the sand expanse for the first time and an acolyte shrugs when Odrade laments losing some ancient buildings to the desert. There's really no reason to post about it but I thought about my shrugging dedicated thread and thought I should document the experience.

I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson
We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert
There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert

They look like they breathe well .. perfect for those warm desert climates.
My lady actually wears shrugs now and again but I don't think she would like to hear how her clothes remind me of Dune .. though she does reference 'the worm' occasionally after I made her read a few pages of God Emperor a while ago.
