I wish I could claim it but it's from River's Edge.

Oh, he also deleted my post in the same topic, "Yeah, the story is much better when Paul runs off to join the circus." In reply to Man In The Shaddow's post.

Wow. I guess factually correct descriptions of the McDune books get deleted now, on the pretext that they show the authors in a bad light?
That's going to limit McDune discussions on DN.

Can't fault a man for that.Freakzilla wrote:(and maybe a little drunk)

(I felt remarkably well when I first got up this morning to watel the riries, but things went downhill quickly: by the second time I got up, I was feeling pretty rough. No headache to speak of, though; probably since we had only one tall thin mug of beer for the kanpai starter and then switched straight to the sake. Mmmm... that was some good shit.

Re: posts that I think will get deleted at DN
I gorged myself on soba with salmon roe for lunch.
OH. MY. GAWD.
No, seriously. I could have died content after that.
If you're ever in Tsukuba, there's a FUCKING FANTASTIC soba place called Kimura just past the old Expo Park, right off the main Tsuchiura-Tsukuba Road (on the left; big white sign with SOBA on it). When I first moved to Iwaki but was going back to Tsukuba on weekends to run around with friends back there, we'd usually do Saturday and Sunday lunches there. But if I'd get back early enough, we might also do Friday dinner there, too. One weekend we did Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday lunch and, right before I headed back to Iwaki, Sunday dinner there.
That was when we realized we had a problem.
But IT'S THAT GOOD!!! And it seemed to cure what ailed me today.

How do you eat that? Seems like it would be very time consuming, even for chopstick masters, unless it's in a broth and you slurp it, or maybe it sticks to the soba (I'm assuming this is soba noodles, and not just a bowl full of cooked buckwheat and roe?! Though that might be an interesting breakfast food... hmmmm. Or... do I have my japanese wrong, does soba not mean buckwheat and in fact only refers to the noodles? Man, yet another language where essentially all of my knowledge of it comes from food! Japanese, Cantonese, Punjabi/whatever language Pakistani people speak that isn't Punjabi but is really close... the list goes on and on
).

The way they serve it at Kimura is in a big bowl (I forgot it's been over ten years since my soba heyday and ordered mine oumori, extra heaping helping...

Yum!

I was stuffed for the rest of the day and only had two onigiri (rice balls; one with pickled plum inside and the other with salmon) for dinner around 9:00 or so.
There are worse ways to pick up a language. Like learning Thai in prison?Man, yet another language where essentially all of my knowledge of it comes from food! Japanese, Cantonese, Punjabi/whatever language Pakistani people speak that isn't Punjabi but is really close... the list goes on and on).

As for the language in Pakistan... Urdu? (= Hindi with lots of Arabic instead of Sanskrit loanwords) Or are you thinking of Pashto?

On the subject of soups from the Orient...
Anyone else as addicted to Pho as I am? It's Vietnamese noodle soup. I've been a fan for quite a while, but have only recently discovered that it was originally invented in Vietnam as an attempt to simulate fine French cuisine.
What they do is put noodles in a beef broth, along with bean sprouts, green onions, and probably some ingredients I'm forgetting. But the kicker is that they put in very-thinly sliced beef, which cooks right in the bowl in front of you. The result is some delicious half-rare beef soup with noodles, bean sprouts, plus basil and chili-peppers to garnish and enhance it. Throw a little Sriracha Cock Sauce in there, and you have a delicious and satisfying soup in front of you. I love that shit.

Pho is the best. There are probably a dozen Pho places within a 10 mile radius of where I live and work (SF Bay Area). Some are better than others, but I would probably have it at least twice a month.

There's a huge Asian population around me, there's a place nearby called What the Pho?

I haven't been there but it gets 4 stars.
