The Navigators

Post by Iganahl »

I am new here, so forgive me if this has already been addressed. The Navigator is the Lynch film (as I've read here) was mainly for exposition and a "cool" special effects development (for the time period). But in relation to the book (skimmed through a few portions of it, and it's been awhile, so I have forgotten some of the details), were the navigators mentioned in detail? I have no memory of it being in the book, and don't remember that situation in the book where the tank-navigator meets up with the Emperor. Was that scene in the film completely fictionalized to present information from the book? Plus, a remember another scene with that same navigator floating around in space. Was that also just another exposition piece to demonstrate how spice folds space for guild travel? Once again, it's been awhile since I've read the book and watched the film, so some of it's a bit hazy. I've recently gained a new interest in Dune, however. Thank you in advance for any clarification.

That too was not in the book. The inner workings of the Spacing Guild were a complete mystery to everyone.

Freak, be a little more nice with our new fellow! :D

Welcome, man!

Well, if your are curious about how the navigator are, you should read the DUNE MESSIAH, the sequel to DUNE written by Frank Hebert, the only real writer of the Dune universe.

In one of the first chapters of the book, there is a description of how a navigator is. They have a fish-like appearance, you can find a lot of draws of a navigator in the web.

I expect I helped you.
The singular multiplicity of this universe draws my deepest attention. It is a thing of ultimate beauty.

What? I answered his question!

We have a whole forum for introductions.

Edric, the navigator who is described in Dune Messaih is described as humanoid with elongated, webbed limbs.

Someone just gave me a book with drawings of species from different sci-fi books. I'll try to get the navigator scanned in soon.

*giggles*

Someone told me about a condition where teeth grow in vaginas. There's even a name for it - Vagina Dentata, which soundds like a song from The Lion King. It doesn't really happen to anyone, apart from old crones from Red Deer. Check out this link -

NORMA CENVA WAS A MAN!

Think about it.

Navigators are always men. There is no mention of a female navigator in any of FH's books, only in The Encyclopedia and the crap by KJA and The Other Guy.

It has to do with the nature of prescience in the Duniverse: men have it stronger than women. For Norma(n) to be a Navigator (THE FIRST Navigator even)...she had to be a he!

In the inferior, alternate Duniverses some would have us accept, Aurelius discovered the truth only after they'd tied the knot, and his pride wouldn't let him divorce her or let the secret get out. Their five children were actually fathered by Norman on a forgotten surrogate.

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

(Speaking of the Old Tail of Red Deer, anyone heard anything more about her planned "Krazy Koncubine Koonts of Kaitain" fanfic? I figure she's working up the background info and characters for this year's NaNoWriMo. ;) )

But FH didn't say Norma was a navigator, just a ship designer... and mother.

That's a great book. I just re-purchased it used from an Amazon seller after originally owning a copy years ago.
