The roll-eye smiley is there for a reason. Its whole purpose is to indicate sarcasm. So why not use it when needed?
Small font is for little comments in addition to the normal text, usually to add a twist to it that's not easily visible on first glance.
Seriously, for an English teacher you're not very familer with writing techniques. Tsk tsk.
But I can give you private lessons after school hours on the subject, if you'd like.

ONE solution is to stop posting over there, no?
BTW, I'm not upset that he deleted my post, he does it all the time.
I take it as a sign that I'm going in the right direction.

I was banned from the "first" official Dune forum pretty soon as well. byron forgot to ban the previously banned ones when the current forum came on-line.

I would not go so far as to call the use of smilies or making the font tiny a writing technique, at least not one I would spend time with in class...I suppose the term writing technique is sort of subjective...but as soon as I see smilies popping up in books I'll sign up for your lessons Who knows, maybe KJABH are working on it right now!orald wrote:

Some never participate. Life happens to them. They get by on little more than dumb persistence and resist with anger or violence all things that might lift them out of resentment-filled illusions of security.

RoTFL, I picked up on that thanks for the warning though. I'm too much of a woman for him anyway...what with my own opinions and all that feminist theory I've read...It would never work outRobspierre wrote: Why he thinks rolling eyes eqals sarcasm is beyond me since the rest of the world see's it as oh god not more of this crap! OFF TOPIC
In my comp class we're doing cause & effect essays and yesterday we were looking at example thesis statements. One was something like
War, famine and ethnic violence have resulted in signficant refugee...
Some of the students started giving me the ole "problem here" body language so I asked if they knew the word "famine". They shook their heads or said no, except for one girl, so I asked her to explain.
"It's...like...woman lib, women rights, feminism!"
Sorry, but I had to laugh at the image of large groups of people (mostly men?) fleeing for their lives from ... FEMINISM!!!
I'm sure Orald can relate.
(Edit: Not sure how that "D" got on "related". )

No-MA'AM!
And Luiquid, obviously you're missing the point here.
If I, as you so eloquantly and mistakenly put it, don't want a woman with opinions or brains, then it's not gonna matter to me if she has those- I'll obviously be wanting only her body, in my cave-man, oppressing way.
In memory of Perach, who suffered and died needlessly.
I wish I could have been with you that one last time.

Brick is a wonderful reader. I've even tried out some new authors (new to me, I mean) in audio form simply because he was the reader.
I couldn't bring myself to purchase any of his "Dune" efforts, though. I've got to draw the line somewhere, I figure. Not even a narrator of his caliber would be able to save Hunters or Sandworms. There's only so many ways the poor guy can be expected to work with vomit-inducing material.

That's "Liquid" and "eloquently", Orald...and you're the one missing the point...I guess the smilie wasn't enough to signify to you that I was JOKING...just because you came off a little worse for the wear in that feminist conversation doesn't mean you have to be a jerk every time we post in the same threadorald wrote:

And SandChigger, thats an awesome class room story...I'm going to have to pass that one on to some of my teacher friends...

One of the perks of teaching. I try to make sure they always know I'm laughing with them, not at them.
Some other past chucklers:
- The girl a few years back who loved McDonald's breakfast menu even though she normally hated "first food" restaurant fare.
- The boy last year who really enjoyed that "Road of the Ring" movie.
And just yesterday there was a bit of mayhem involving "pushing bottoms" on your cellphone to activate the camera.
It's never dull.

Hopefully it involved cute Japanese girls in schoolgirl outfits.
Ah, Liquid, Liquid, Liquid...obviously, I know how to write your name, and I do confess I have some issues with replacing "a" and "e" in such words as "eloquently", "violent", "recommend" etc, where I usually put an "a".
Now you try Hebrew(oh, that'll be FUN! so many wierd spellings here, even without any Frenchy influence).

It's the white thigh-highs that do it for me.
[EDIT]
They should be knee-highs though, shouldn't they? Little girls in thigh-highs is just wrong...
Wait, all of this is just wrong.
Oh well.

As long as the little girls are 18 then there is nothing wrong with it ...
