I've been listening to the Audio Rennaisance Dune audio book today and just got to the "C.H.". I can't help but chuckle every time they say it.

Who's the reader on that, and what kind of accent do they have?

I keep imagining this really bad hick "see-aytch".

It's read by Scott Brick, Olagh Cassidy, Euan Morton, Simon Vance and "Cast". I first noted it by Hawat's character but they seem to all pronounce it the same way.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to think that Dune characters should have an English/British accent. Especially for the upcoming (and fantasized) movies.

Which makes absolutely no fucking sense, since they don't speak English.

We tend to periodically get distracted arguing about guns and so forth. Nothing new, nothing to worry about. I'm going to re-read Messiah soon so I'm sure I'll have looootttttsss of questions for the people here if that makes you feel better.

Very helpful. When I first read Dune I assumed FH wanted everything pronounced super exotic, so I mispronounced things for a long while...

Atreides as "A-tray-uh-deez"

Harkonnen as "Hark-un-in" (Which is apparently the right way after all. I switched over to "Hark-cone-in")

And Bene Gesserit as "Bane Jess-er-it"


I'm still surprised that Chani is "Chany" rather than "Chun-eye"

Damn...I'm stuck with all the pronunciation from the movie and Mini...it never occurred to me they could messing with it...

The spelling of Chani makes no sense whatsoever, given FH's pronunciation of it as "Chay-nee" (to rhyme with "zany").

Couldn't Chani be pronounced as it is and spelt 'phonetically incorrect' (if that's what its called) because of the natural changes in spelling that occur over time? Or do those changes also incorporate changes to pronunciation? I'm just thinking of things like the change in English of wulf to wolf or Wilhelm to William (second one looks obvious in terms of pronunciation but I know little about Old English pronunciation).

My wife insist on spelling our daughter's name wrong. Her name is Elizabeth and we call her Ellie (L-E). She spells it Elle. To me that looks like "L".

Well, I guess that's a possibility. Another way of looking at is is that it's only spelled C-H-A-N-I in our alphabet as a convenience to the modern reader. The Fremen speak a form of Arabic (and know Chakobsa and Galach) and who knows how they would write her name (=using what letters and in what way).
