Frank stated in a interview that he read over 200 books in preparation for writing Dune.LiquidBlue wrote:Hi
Also, about readers that enjoy the new Dune books, but can't get into Frank's...I think that has more to do with level at which your average reader is prepared to think. Frank's books are more conceptual and require higher order thinking, where as KJA&BH are simply surface level texts...people no longer want to think...all the recapping, to me, has a very "TV" feel to it too
Kevin has often said in interviews that when he is not hiking, he is watching all the sci-fi shows on tv or movies on dvd so he can keep up on the latest.
The results speak for themselves.

I do have some questions.
Who are Pinky and Brain? Is this Brian and Kevin? Or someone else?
Who has a comb-over? I think you mean Kevin Anderson. Is that correct?
Who is Byron and why was he called out as a coward?
Who are the HLP? Is that Frank Herbert's family?
Thank you.

KA has the comb-over, and Chigger thinks his hair is better fopr some reason.
Byron Merritt is the grandson of FH, and he (over)moderates the dunenovels.com site. Most of us were banned from there, hence we are the "cast out".
The Herbert Limited Partnership is the business that makes money from all the Dune books (including films and merchandise), including the prequels/sequels. The list of partners is a mystery, but surely includes BH, KA, and probably Byron too.

2 yes
3 Byron is Frank Herbert's Great-Nephew, IIRC.
4 The HLP or the Herbert Limited Partnership is made up of Herbert family members but not the whole family.

The correct term is "pussy" not coward (a person could have a pair but still be a coward). This has been discussed at length in several threads which produced numerous entertaining replies from Ol'Prune Dude.dm1215 wrote:I do have some questions.

What exactly is it that is pissing people off here??bryanvdk wrote:dm, not trying to nag, but we get the point that you're new here and just learning. you don't have to keep reminding us of it or trying to excuse your questions.
DM comes here, introduces himself, states some opinion, tells everybody he is new to Dune, asks questions, and wants to learn more.
That is a problem?

I think the house books are okay for light airplane reading. The rest suck, and suck hard.
Welcome to the forums, by the way. Ignore Orald, cuz he's an ass, spams alot, and worships Frank Herbert. Literally.
Freak is cool. So is Omphalos. Chigger is cool, but he's almost as bad as
Orald when it comes to prequel bashing.
Have fun, take a look around, and if you get tired of people ragging on you, send me a pm.
If you have any questions not answered to your satisfaction, send me a pm.
In general, if you need something, send me a pm. I promise I'll get back to you in less than a month. Hehe.

I always welcome newcomers without any additional comment.
This time it is different because of the reasons stated by newcomer how he or she "found" Dune not just because he or she likes the prequels.
I also find it very hypocritical to state that one form of prequelite bashing is okay and another one isn't.
Do I have to give a prequelite the feeling of being secure and safe first before you can trash his opinions to bits?

Wow, that is very good, Serk, I never thought of it that way.Serkanner wrote:Do I have to give a prequelite the feeling of being secure and safe first before you can trash his opinions to bits?
Lure them in and then strike suddenly, before they know what hit them.
Very cunning.

Orald, seriously, pop over by the DN BBS (yes, I know, you'll want to...have to wash off afterwards) and look for some of the posts by their new wonderchild named Vagabond. There's no comparison.
I don't mind people enjoying the new books. On an airplane or on the beach or when they're stuck on an elevator during a power failure and there's nothing else to read by the light of their lighter.
It's when they try to tell me that the new books are a worthwhile and valuable contribution to the Dune canon, that there are no inconsistencies, that the Normacle and vroom-vroom make sense in the Duniverse, etc., that there will be problems....

OMG, it's Kevie! Where've you been, hon? Long time no dick.
Chig, I do have a problem with the pre's without even getting Dune canon into the picture- they're juvenile shit and I wouldn't be caught dead reading them now.
If you want to pass the time either:
1. Sleep. It's always good to get a little nap while you can. You might never know when you'll have the chance again.
2. Mastrobate. Same reason as the above.
And if you've got a longish time then do 2 then 1.

Wow, my little introduction has turned into a debate. Sorry about any confusion I have added. I am new to Dune and trying to learn all I can. I appreciate the welcome from you.
I am worried about what I see on these message boards. I am surprised by some of the things that have been written about other members and the authors of the books. But I am green to all of this, as they say. The learning process continues. I hope to learn a lot. Thank you again.
