Greetings, Orthodox Herbertarians friends

Post by Cordwainer Smith »

Well, this is a special moment for me. I've been reading topics in this forum for a few years now, but never took the time to register. Well, it's done now.

Many reasons for that, but the most important is probably that english is not my first langage, and even if I read it easily, it is harder for me (and makes me shy a bit?) to express myself about such a complex subject as Dune in a langage that is not the one I grew up with. So please be indulgent if I make some syntax or grammar mistakes from time to time. Also, note that I haven't read Dune in english but in the excellent (wich is rare in sci-fi) french translation, an element that can make it harder to debate when it comes to semantics...

I'm a long time reader of FH Dune. Read it for the first time at 14, and from my teen years to my mid 30's, I've read it 20-22 times (lost the count at the end). And then I stopped for a while (job, family life, time for a pause...). I'm now 42 and currently reading it again for the first time in a decade, and i'm still amazed at the depth of this masterpiece, understanding some new elements, or maybe just understanding them differently as I grow older. For an example - I'm at the end of GEoD and for the first time it struck me forcefully that Leto deliberatly and willingly planned his own death (but that's for another thread).

As for the new novels that claim to be in the same universe, well, I'm here for the same exact reasons as you are, so I won't start a rant - because I know all of you share the same feelings.
Let's just say I'm glad I only read half of House Atreides when it was first published, and never put my eyes on another of these abominations.

About me, well, appart from being an enthusiastic reader, I'm also involved in local politics where I try to enforce the Bene Gesserit's principles in a postmodern and hedonist world.

So Greetings, all. Hope to discuss with you soon!

Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

Thank you Serkanner, it is much appreciated. Have you read "The Rediscovery of Man" wich is the complete collected short fiction by Cordwainer Smith? It is fascinating because it is litterally the fictionnal story of manking from the 80's to a distant future. Nostrilia takes place within this universe.

And thank you for the very warm welcome!

I love the fiction of Cordwainer Smith... So I'm a little disappointed that you're not him, because he's dead.

Anyhow, Welcome, Twice Welcome!
I don't think the author should make the reader do that much work - Kevin J. Anderson
We think we've updated 'Dune' for a modern readership without dumbing it down.- Brian Herbert
There’s an unwritten compact between you and the reader. If someone enters a bookstore and sets down hard earned money(energy) for your book, you owe that person some entertainment and as much more as you can give. - Frank Herbert

Well, thank you everyone, it IS a very heartwarming welcome.
I feel especially home by the fact it is the first time I encounter people who know who Paul Linebarger is, and more than that, have read is short stories and novel...

So thanks to you, Omphalos, Freakzilla and JVTA.
Serkanner, I suggest you put it on the top of your long list, you won't be disappointed.
Apjak, sorry i'm not the real Cordwainer Smith, nothing is perfect in this world

Now, time to toss an old thread about Daniel and Marty!
