Rereading Dune

Post by FreeParking »

Hi all,

How's everyone doing? I recently decided to start rereading the final 3 dune chronicles, starting with GEoD. It's been 6 - 7 years since I've read them and I have a ton of topics I'm interested in talking about. The great thing about re-reading GEoD (and having access to thoughtful analysis on the internet) is that I noticed I've picked up a lot of stuff I misunderstood the first time through.

Funny coincidence (or, rather, not): Back when I was making my first read through of the later Dune Chronicles (do you call it the 2nd trilogy?), I posted sporadically on a different forum. One of my favorite commenters there was none other than one "Freakzilla". Small world :D . Glad to see you are still doing well, and that hatred of those books masquerading as prequels is as un-yielding as ever.

welcome here, and don't worry if you always find new meanings to Dune, since that is exactly why so many people love it :)

Please share, maybe it is just a point of view we've missed.

My hatred doesn't burn as strong as it used to but there are plenty of others here to carry the torch for me. Welcome back, man.

Be sure to check out the Reading Group for GEoD, HoD and CH:D as you re-read.

I think I remember the username, which is surprizing since I suck at remembering names. You were a member at Arrakeen?

Thanks for all the welcomes. I can't remember which website I posted at as it was, if memory serves me correct, at least 7 years ago (summer '05). It was one of those forums where you could change your name whenever you posted; there weren't actual, set accounts (which lead to some annoying trolls). I think it was Arakeen, not DuneNovels. I don't remember what name I used there as it was forever ago, and I really doubt you'd remember me (I posted there <10 times I'd guesstimate), I was mostly a lurker who read a lot of your posts. I'm glad I stumbled on this site (googling the term "museum Fremen"). I'll be adding an avatar here in the next couple days.

So, can anyone point me to any threads discussing Leto's assassination?

I think we have one on the "four deaths" but not one on his assassination in general. Try here: The Golden Path, start a new topic if you don't find what you're looking for.

This is the reading group chapter from GEoD in which he divides: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=674&hilit=leto+death" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

About the reading group... try not to post spoilers for people who haven't read past that point.

Hey, there! I don't think that it's enough to love the books. You must also hate the prequels/interquels/sequels.

Not true. Those who do like them are welcome here as well. They usually don't feel welcome because they don't have the ability to explain why the atrocities are what they are.

Yeah, it's not even that I hate the new books. I mean, hate is a strong word. I was responding to this post:

Although they are some pretty bad books. I'm not sure what to make of them, or the people that read and enjoy them. I pretty much kept quiet about it, until I came across the chiggerblog, and then this place. I think that, in the time I've been around, a few people that claimed to like the new books have come around. I don't really think that I had anything to say to them- and if I did, it wasn't anything negative. I'm not sure if any of the prequel fans are still around. I know Kwisatz posted a picture of a book that had been autographed by BH and KJA, and you can't say he's not a true Dune fan. He's got this thread around here that I like. Hmm, I forgot what I was going on about. Never mind.

I think some (a lot?) of people just aren't bright enough to enjoy and understand the originals, but they kinda sense or have been told that they should, so this crap that they can wrap their heads around is one way of them being a part of "the Dune thing".

That was something I felt again, very strongly, at the Dayton signing.
I know Kwisatz posted a picture of a book that had been autographed by BH and KJA, and you can't say he's not a true Dune fan.
If we're ever to get anything good out of the Herberritts, it will either be through a defector from the inner circle or through the efforts of people like Kwisatz or Askaris... personally, I don't think I could stand the stench long enough to get that close to any of them. :snooty:
