This might be a stupid question, but why wasn't Leto II named Leto III? I mean, the original Leto II was killed by Sardaukars when he was a baby. So why did Paul and Chani name their second son, the main character of Children of Dune, Leto II as well? Isn't he supposed to be Leto III? Has this been explained anywhere?

One only assumes the numeral upon ascension to the throne.

just in case that's read the wrong way, I'll explain so I confuse even more the picture, as most likely everyone knew already I was not implying that stupid had anything to do with the original question, which is quite pertinent really.
