Hello!

Post by Spice Must Flow »

It's been many years since I've been on a Dune site.
I first read the Dune series in the late 80's when I was about 16-17. I remember how laborous getting through God Emperor was - because every couple of pages I had to put it down and really think about what Leto was saying. It was almost like he really was a real embodiment of collective wisdom!

I've maybe read the series 10 times or so in the 90's.

I read the prequel series when it came out 10 years or so ago. I remember not being impressed, and I remember being annoyed (primarily, among other things, where was Duncan's debt to the Atreides? And Gurney, heck, he rescued himself!) But I don't remember being mad.
I recently read the two books that are supposed to be Dune 7, and you know what, I AM mad!
I wouldn't get mad at crappy story telling, etc., but why change the obvious intentions of the original work.
The thing that irks me the most is that the author(s) didn't understand the golden path. Now, perhaps none of us entirely understand it and there's room for interpretation - but I know what it is not - and they DID NOT get it - or did they get it, and are purposefully trying to ruin it? I can't tell.

I've been looking at Dune sites on the web the last couple of days (on a whim I guess) I've had fun taking a couple of hours reading through posts here - and i think I am on the same page as many here. It's really weird to read some places how people don't like the old books because they are "hard to read." It's like the modern reader abhors any depth to their literature.

Mr Chig - was it not you who told me long ago to give up on wanting gender neutral pronouns and just accept that "their" as singular was perfectly acceptable.

I hate it too, but Chig was pretty much endorsing it last time this came up. Let the grammar battle begin!

Ah, so when he said "nice use of the singular their," he actually meant it. I interpreted it as "use proper grammer, you dumbass." I'll just cut my palm and sheath my crysknife. It's nice to see supporters of the singular their, although I confess I didn't even know it was an issue - with factions.

I think we should just go back to using 'his' unless a woman is specifically involved. :snooty: :P

 Not at all! If I had meant "use proper grammer, you dumbass", rest assured that that is exactly what I would have posted! ;)

I don't know if it's really an issue out in the greater, wider world, but I've been reading some things lately by one writer in particular who is still clinging—doggedly or doggy-style—to that really annoying "solution" of alternating the use of "his" and "her", etc. I would almost agree with SCynic and just say fuck it, but I know the Warriors of Linguistic Logic will not go down so easily.

I just use "they". Am particularly fond of "themself" at the moment, in fact. ;)

Have you come across the writers who write a note at the start of the book apologising for using only male 'imaginary people'? :angry-screaming:

Never. But that would result, in me, in a strong motivation NOT to read any further. ;)

It happens, for example, in the new foreword to Godel, Escher, Bach. He writes about the fact that he 'unwittingly' fell into the trap of having all his characters male just because there was no explicit reason to have them female.

I wish you hadn't told me that.
