After all this talk about the genius of a man who sold music players with no memory extension and expensively designed computers, it's good to remember that computer genius was once measured in achievements and not money or business sense

That's very sad. A true legend gone too soon. We owed him much.

Not that soon. He was 70.

He really was a genius, without him we wouldn't have unix and hence, we wouldn't have linux either. I started using linux over 2 years ago and i never looked back. I'm using Ubuntu right now.

Nice!

(Although main() should have argc/argv parameters :P )

Edited to add: Dude, some of us are not *that* far from 70 - and I hope to live longer than that.

I have nothing against Jobs but it just annoys me to see him hailed a computer saint/genius when people like D. Ritchie are closer to that.
I'm not familiar enough with those languages to fully appreciate them but anything that participates in the general good is what computer science is truly about as far as I'm concerned.

Apple just brought a formatted experience to people who would not have bothered, was that a good thing ? I don't know, I don't feel concerned by iphones et ipad, but I'm interested in an OS that's free and does only what you ask it to do ^^

I think they both had a huge impact, but in such different ways that it's hard to compare them. I agree that Ritchie should be more well known than he is, though.

70 is well before the average life expectancy, so "too soon" I think still safely applies! I don't think "died young" would be appropriate though...
