Proper footy!

While in Oregon I got to see a MLS exhibition game, Portland Timbers vs West Brom from across the pond. My brother and his brother-in-law are members of the Timber's Army so we spent the game in the North section going nuts with beer drinking, chants, and singing.

Here are some of their chants and traditions:

You can watch the games streaming or listen to them on the radio:

I prefer the radio, you can hear the Timber's Army chanting. They're playing at this moment.

Damn, I'm listening to the game on the radio and the traveling Timber Army is louder than the home crowd!

I notice you keep tissue on your bed. Do you have a cold or something, Rob?

Yeah, and what's that thing next to it, a penis scratcher?

Not a cold, allergies, including dust and cottonwoods which are blooming like bloody crazy. The scratcher is for my ass, got someone else to scratch up front ;)

My Leeds United were thumped good by Southampton 3-1. I still think Leeds can compete for promotion, we shall see.

Best goal at the World Cup 2010, Gio van Bronckhorst, The Netherlands during the semi-final against Uruguay.

The Pacific Northwest has long been a bastion of soccer in the US, Portland, Shittle, er Seattle, and Vancouver B.C. have had a rivalry going since the mid 70's.

Here is a pic of one gal who's parents are bringing her up right.

She's going Whale hunting! (IE Seattle)

Here is an ad for the Timbers that played on TV:

One of the numerous billboards that had popped up around Portland.

Double bit axes, crosscut saws, and chainsaws, The Timbers have done a good job of tapping into the mythology of the state.

Brilliant shot, that. What a way to retire (well, penultimate game, anyway).

Can't YouTube at the moment, but look up Bergkamp's goal against Argentina with the Dutch commentator.

That melonfarmer loses his mind.

The Dutch commentator is Jack van Gelder. he started commenting matches of the Dutch national team in 1988 and went berserk after every Dutch goal, remember the five goals by Van Basten? The Bergkamp goal is the most beautiful goal of the 1998 world cup in France.

I still prefer the goal he scored in the Premiership against Newcastle. Dennis Bergkamp - sheer bloody genius.

The man made so many wonderful goals in his career it is hard to find the one ultimate favourite.

I agree with the Newcastle goal. For me it's the best goal of all time, simply because I've never seen anything else like it.

There are hundreds of amazing, mazy runs, thousands of thunderbolts from distance, and dozens of twinkle-toed dances, but nothing else like this.

Really? Shame, that. It takes a bit of special-ness away from this goal to know that he goes berserk for every goal.

I went to see Juve vs. Sporting a few weeks ago here in Toronto. Great game, for a friendly. Certainly compared to Roma vs. Celtic here several years ago.

That's the kind of guy I want calling my games. The excitement's contagious!

Nothing can take away from the specialness of that goal.

I know, but I liked the idea that the sheer magnitude of Bergkamp's goal (breaking a tie heading into injury time, a spot in the semis against Brazil on the line, the absolute quality of the strike) elicited that insane reaction from the commentator.

I don't like the dispelling of the illusion.

I remember I screamed my longs out as well when he scored that goal ... and everybody else who was in the room. Damn what a match that was. :D

...and then they followed it up with the penalty debacle against Brazil. I remember seeing de Boer walk up and saying, "No! You don't put a defender on the spot!" Aaaand, he missed it.

I am still crying :tissue2: ... Holland is the best team that will never be world champions.
