Jacurutu Pronunciation

Hey, I was just thinking about this. I'd been pronouncing it "Jack-uh-roo-too" but I was just thinking the first U might be an OO sound too, like "Jack-oo-roo-too". Anything definite on this one? I can't remember hearing FH say it himself in any recordings of him that I have.

I don't know of anything official, but I pronounce it "Jack-oo-roo-too."

Well, it's not originally Arabic in origin (believe me, I've tried to find a valid root for it!), but presumably it's supposed to be either Fremen or Chakobsa. (NB that Shuloch is derived from Arabic.)

Either way, it's not English (but originally the name of a river in South America?), but that doesn't mean that FH wouldn't have pronounced it as an English word (witness Chani as something like Cheney instead of Chah-nee).

FWIW, I say it like JACK-oo-Roo-too: primary stress initially with secondary stress on third syllable. But if you remember, my basic position is that "pronunciation elitism" ("Well, FH said it like this....") is the same kind of bullshit as vying over how many times you've read the series.

Say it however you want to. If someone doesn't understand what you mean, they can ask you or remain ignorant. C-H Tabrrrr, anyone? ;)

(And remember that in Fremen it could be pronounced one of two ways: Jacurutu or Jaqurutu. Any preferences, since at this point it's basically up in the air? ;) )

I agree totally, doesn't matter. I was just curious what other people's takes were. :)

Jaqurutu
I like this. I think it's obvious that the first "u" is definitely the least stressed vowel. I personally use the "oo" sound, but it's very muted. Almost like the JP almost silent "u" in the transliteration of desu. Does anyone know how it's pronounced in Portugese since there's that river in Brasil?

I miss him, he was a really good guy, and very knowledgeable in astro-physics, we had some good talks. I think he really loved DN dispite it's failings, and they betrayed him worse than almost anyone, he was a polite poster there for years, then because of something he said over here on these forums he was banned. He lasted a fair while after that, but I think he really enjoyed those insane unwinable debates, and we don't really have those anymore.

:(

He just posted recently about Welsh artifacts, or something like that. Not too long ago.

Jack-uh-ROO-too ... after saying it aloud just now. Emphasis on the third syllable. I'm not sure why; I think it's how I've "said" it in my head from Day One.
