Good episode last night, I'll probably watch it again tonight. If you're reading this and haven't watched it yet (and are planning too) then you're dumb, but I'll avoid spoilers. I'll just say the ending is something we've all been wanting to happen for a while now!

I like Bronn, not exactly how I pictured him but it works. The trial by combat was good, had an ending that was an unnecessary addition in my opinion, but didn't ruin it or anything.

Loved Tyrion's confession :)

Yeah, the Sky Door being in the middle of the floor bothered me, because they don't show the rest of the throne room hanging off the side of the cliff, it looks like the throne room is just floating above the clouds.

Tywin appears in episode 7. Charles Dance does an awesome job, even if he didn't shave his head for the part.

The sky door bugged me too. I find it weird that they've altered relatively little so far, but then the Eyrie they really made some changes. Oh well, doesn't really impact the story or anything.

I kinda almost wish they would do this in a different format: instead of 1 hour a week, do 2 episodes back to back every other week. I think with a 2 hour slot they wouldn't have to jump around as much nor edit the show around certain 'cliffhangers'. I do like that they leave certain things off-screen like Martin did in the books, he used it as an effective tool so he wouldn't have to show everything and you get to experience the shock along with the characters.

There is a spoiler-ish rumor that they kill off someone in season 1 that shouldn't die till book 3, but so far they haven't said who it is.

I like the one hour per week format, it's the only realistic way to run a show, 2 weeks is too long, most viewers are dumbasses and will forget which weeks it's on!

A buddy of mine just started reading the book because he was loving the show so much, and he noticed a very weird change they made to the very first scene that I didn't catch (it'd been a while since I read it, and it's sort of a minor detail, but kind of a profound one too).

In the show and the book, there's the 3 Rangers out that get attacked by the White Walker. In the book, it's the old tough guy who's been in the Night's Watch for decades who gets away and is so terrified that he turns derserter and is executed for it. In the show, he dies, and it's the younger ranger (not as tough or brave) who runs away and is executed... totally strange thing for them to alter in the show, and though it's small, it was an important detail that it was the seasoned veteran who was so terrified that he ran and ran and would never go back.

Haven't commented in this thread in a while, but going back two weeks...was it really necessary to show Loras going down on Renly? I know their "affair" was hinted at in the book, but this seemed like an obvious "let's be edgy and show gay sex!" sort of thing.

I also liked how starting with episode 5 they worked The Eyrie into the opeing sequence. Very cool. And I agree that the actual depiction of The Eyrie in the show is pretty underwhelming. Boo.

Concerning episode 6, I'm betting they're going to merge the characters of the Winterfell whore from the show with the Shae character from the books. You heard it here first. I also liked the way they brought to light the question of Joffrey's parentage. The little diatribe by Sansa was the perfect catalyst for Ned to start connecting the dots. It worked very well for the TV format I think.

Even though I still don't get the look of the Targaryn hair, I think the show's creators are doing a great job getting us emotionally invested in Drogo and Danyres. They have really artfully and skillfully brought her along from submissive sister to savage princess. Great job.

IIRC it was Sansa's mentioning of Joff's hair that triggered the eureka for Ned.

I think that is only a small part of the reason they went with the more "graphic" depiction.

Women viewers. There is reason the majority of slash fan fiction is male/male pairings. HBO is playing to the female demographic, besides, we saw Jaime doggy style fucking his sister, why is it bad to hear a gay couple enjoying a cock suck?

To show the world realistically. We have graphic incest sex, talk of people enjoying sex with boys and girls, why would the values of our society be taken into consideration in Westeros?

We have hetero sex so lets have gay sex.

Finally,

I will say that episode 7 has the most utterly pointless sex scene in the entire series; overly long, out of character, and basically had me thinking "which member of the production staff is this actress sleeping with to get this much screen time". IMHO it went beyond gratuitous, ergo pointless.

No sex scene is pointless if the girl is hot. How did you see episode 7?

HBO streamed Episode 7 on its web service after Episode 6, and someone was...kind enough to let me watch.

I've already made the decision to buy the DVD's when they arrive, whats the harm in a preview?

I'll reserve judgement on this sex scene until I see it!

Also, I'm with Rob on the gay scene, I'm sure the shock value of it was factored in, but to be honest the show needed more shock to it, so far it hasn't been nearly as shocking as the books are, so it needs whatever iit can get. The rest of what Rob said I agree with, it just makes sense as an addition.

Wait... why is male on male sex supposed to appeal to the female demographic? I read something like that in a NYT review a few weeks back and wondered wtf that was about.

I was wondering that, too. Women are not like men, if you find a girl that likes to watch gay porn (or any porn for that matter), hang onto her and never let go.

I kinda think characters like Arya and Jon appeal to the female demo more than any of the sexual encounters on the show. Of course those two characters are nearly everyone's favorites anyway.

I guess because it's typically a more tender and nurturing manner of love-making, just like they depicted it in Oz. :P

I do hate the blowjob sound effects they use, I can't remember if Deadwood used the same ones, but they weren't as...sloppy? Can I get away with calling BJ sound effects bad because they sound overly sloppy?

As for episode 7, sure the girl(s) were hot, but it takes a special something to make a pointless lesbian sex scene.

Amp, surely you jest, you of all people would never call any lesbian sex scene pointless.

I just did. Me. That makes it extra pointless.

runs off to Google italics + lesbian sex

Thanks, I did not know that! Are they going to continue doing that for the rest of the season?

Alright, so yeah the lesbian scene was pretty gratuitous... and graphic... and only one of the chicks was hot (take a WILD guess which one I tought was hot... hmmm... AToE likes small boobs and dark skin... hmmm... ). But oh well. I didn't think the scene was actually too terrible, it was a weird way to introduce Little Finger's story into the show, but it got it done.

I do wish they'd found a way to show that Sam's position as Steward for the old guy (I'm so bad with names...) was Jon's doing, but stuff has to get cut.
