Ghost in a shell - very weak. Having Scarlett Johansson in it was for me the only reason I finished watching it.

Agreed. I just rented it a few nights ago.

Too bad to hear. I was looking forward to this.

Haven't seen it yet myself tho.

I saw the Amazing Spider Man 2 on Netflix shortly before seeing Spiderman: Homecoming a couple of weeks ago. I found them both more or less entertaining but not that memorable. I'm seeing Dunkirk tonight, and hopefully this coming weekend I might check out Valerian. I'm starved for interesting sci-fi

Agreed. There's be a long dearth of great sci-fi films in recent years.

Dunkirk was like watching the same scene four or five times from different perspectives. So much so that I wasn't sure if that's what they were trying to do. It wasn't bad though.

My friend called it a well-made flight simulator. To me it was like a 105 minute trailor for the actual film containing a story. It was a quality product, but not a product I needed.

Dunkirk was just overrated, as far as I can tell. I enjoyed it, especially from a cinematic and sound perspective, but it was not the groundbreaking event it was made out to be.

Spiderman: Homecoming was very meh for me, but a lot of people seemed to enjoy it.

Can't wait to see Atomic Blonde, looks pretty cool.

I'm afraid Valerian isn't that great, but if you do decide to see it see it in a cinema because it uses visuals really well. Have you seen Arrival? It came out last year and is pretty amazing sci-fi.

I am looking forward to Valerian too. It looks to me like they picked the wrong actors, but I am interested.

I liked the actors. I feel the script was at fault and that they did their best. Actually they seemed to be acting out a relationship other than what the author intended, which I find funny, but it was a more plausible relationship than what Besson wanted. The movie is very colorful and creative, and I do recommend it even though Frank Herbert it is not.

I don't have to watch it to know that they are both too inexperienced to carry off those roles, in that movie. Whatsherface could barely pull off the witch in that shitty Suicide Squad movie; dancing around all the time like a tweaked out meth-head and trying to talk like a dude. But, I will watch it because Luc Besson is more than capable of pulling a fucking rabbit out of his hat when he wants to. And I don't care who he ever stole from. The guy has it, when he puts his mind to it.

'

You're not wrong, but inexperience can be covered by a director who helps bring them into the roles. A great actor could make it happen regardless of the director, but most of the time I think an actor will look good or bad depending on who's at the helm; they're at the mercy of the script and the director to a large extent. In this case, while I liked a lot about the setting and even the ideas in the story, some of the scripting of the character relationships was just weak, and it's really hard to buy into the role when the lines you're saying are weak-sauce (source: I'm an actor). Ian McKellan can make any line sound like Shakespeare, but most can't do that. A few of the lines the leads had to say to each other made me cringe, even though many aspects of the movie made me smile. It's kind of like SW Ep II, where although one might like to blame Portman and Christenson for the godawful "I'm beautiful because I'm in love with you" debacle, at the end of the day it's Lucas who made that horror-show happen. I had actually seen The Amazing Spider-Man 2 just prior to Valerian and was surprised at how solid DeHaan was in that, so I think with good material and a clear sense of what he's supposed to do he could have done better. Listening to the lines in Valerian (even the first romance scene at the start) I wasn't even sure what I was supposed to think about their relationship. I didn't even come out knowing what the authorial intent was, and that's pretty weird.

Yeah. I think you get that may be another little problem with this one. Actually, I completely forgot that kid was even in Spider Man II. But as I had already forgotten that the character of Green Goblin was even in the movie . . . well, that speaks for that. That movie was 360 degrees of shit, Dehaan included.

I did like Chronicle though. He played that one really ham-fisted, but he did not detract so much from the movie that I would call it bad.

Anyone else in here getting really hyped for Blade Runner 2049? I'm extremely curious to see what Villeneuve does with it.

Ditto. Flicks have been pretty disappointing lately.

Blade Runner 2049. Quite simply a brilliant film. I will be seeing this again. It gives me great hope about Villeneuve directing Dune. I hope he gets started on it sooner, rather than later.

On my list, for sure. Heard it did only average in the box office this weekend.

Have any of you seen an anime called Perfect Blue?

Got to see a cinema screening of it recently. So excellent! I didn't know what was real and what wasn't by the end.
