Appendix C is a discussion of how the Stringline "works"

Unless I've missed something obvious, I don't see how this transportation sysytem they've devised works

IIRC a ship has to lay down fixed markers, their equivalent of railway tracks Dozer* once mentioned, and the stringline ships can only travel on the lanes marked down. But, the whole galaxy is moving, suns rotating around the galactic core, planets orbiting those suns. In six months time, we'll be 180 million miles from where we are now. So how can it possibly work?

Not to mention that even if we agreed with this concept of finding a safe path (pretty fucking easy to do in space for christ's sake, just stay away from the big glowing things called stars, they tend to have shit you can crash into around them, and keep your frakking radar on) - why markers? Do these people not have computers with more than a megabyte or two of storage space to store a bloody MAP in?!

Seriously, they can't just write down the safe route?

Seriously, you just have to have KJA talk down to you in a couple of emails and blog comments and it soon becomes very personal.

It's hard not take their physicality as a manifestation of the sloppiness of thought (or lack thereof?) that reveals itself in their tastes in books and "writers".

I'd say I was like that just up until a few weeks ago. And the final straw was kja calling them Babes. He's such a shitty writer that he couldn't think of a more appropriate term than that? It's just insulting. They know damn well they're not babes (even on Hellhole).

I generally agree with the sentiment, but I'm guessing it's a flexible, changeable line for most of us.

Speaking only for myself, I try to discern between combatants and non-combatants. A good example would be Bobo's extended family. Other than some of them being in the HLP (a group of idiots), I leave them out of any of the back-and-forth. They're civilians.

But the three idiots in that photo? Definitely combatants, proven through deeds and words. Fuck 'em. They want to go to a pizza place and then try some tough-guy photos? Sorry, but I'm not passing up that comedy gold.

If Mr. Anderson were a great author and he had that look on his face, I would be like, "Oh man, what a cool guy!" The weight thing wouldn't even be an issue. If I were to say anything about the guy on the far right (he's really fat), people would probably jump to his defense and call me an asshole and question my looks.
