IIRC a ship has to lay down fixed markers, their equivalent of railway tracks Dozer* once mentioned, and the stringline ships can only travel on the lanes marked down. But, the whole galaxy is moving, suns rotating around the galactic core, planets orbiting those suns. In six months time, we'll be 180 million miles from where we are now. So how can it possibly work?
