Anyone know how Dune is perceived in Japan? My Japanese pen friend says she has never heard of it or Frank Herbert which is funny because otherwise she is quite well read (she has read Arthur C Clarke and Robert A Heliner). Its funny because I heard Japan was one of the few places where the David Lynch movie was popular and well received.

The movie evidently did well (I wasn't over here then) and used to get shown on TV every once in a while. (I rarely bother with Japanese TV these days; it's a wasteland. The first mini-series shows up every other year or so on the satellite channels, ) The books have been translated (even the McDune shit, up through the Houses), though the Japanese translator passed away a few years back.

I exchanged a few messages with a Japanese blogger I found in a web search once (his opinion was that the language in the translations was a bit stilted and odd), but I haven't really actively tried searching out fans over here. I'm sure they're around, but with all the "native" stuff available...

By the way, 砂丘 sakyû literally means "sand hill" or "sanddune". Dune is usually just rendered phonetically as デューン Dyûn or translated as 砂の惑星 Suna no Wakusei "Sand Planet" (or "Planet of Sand").

First it is spelled "let's" and second if Dune is exciting that's probably why we're fighting to restore it to just that, and that break that should be given? We all know who should be giving it! (yeah we all know who's the receiver in the unholy brainstormings)

I have no problem with the chicken-tracks in the title, it can look very cool & hip & all,
but there must be an accompanying translation .... for one thing, we don't want a flood
of Babylon on this board and for two, with the on-coming tidal wave of moonspeak and
gundi spammers, I'm sure Omph doesn't want to have to wade thru foreign character sets
to determine if the post is legimate ...

Nope, not jumping the bandwagon at all. Previous posts of mine as responses to yours make very clear I have a certain dislike of how you behave on this forum, not a dislike of you in person because, indeed, I don't know you personally.

Well I'm glad thats how you think because what I meant. I'm not going to make judgments about someone's personal life based on an internet forum nor am I going to fall out with anyone because of one stupid incident. Not how I imagined Dune.

It apears Whipping Star Muchiutareru Hoshi and the Dosadi Experiment Dosadi Jikkensei was published in Japan:

Those Dune covers look like they're fairly old. My first volume of Dune features a still from the Lynch movie (Paul with his hand in Mohiam's box).

The name of the company has obviously changed, too. The old copies show Hayakawa SF Bunko "Hayakawa SF Library (or Collection)"; mine says Hayakawa Shobô "Hayakawa Publishing".

I wonder if that Children cover series was inspired by the English edition with the connected cover illustrations?

(The Children title translation is shit, too: "Dune: Children of the Sanddune". )
