And introduce a bunch of historical inconsistencies and create a whole new group of haters among historical fiction fans!
Actually, that'd probably be a good thing. He'd cultivate more talifans!

you have been challenged :)

also - Does anyone know if any other group of people interested in high-quality lit, and aware of Frank Herbert's Dune series, have any reservations on the quality of writing in the new books? Groups unrelated to Jacurutu? Had some lively discussions this weekend with some friends about this, and it was awesome! (got 2 copies of Dune and DM into their hands, and steered them away from the new stuff when they asked which Dune books they should read first :handgestures-fingerscrossed: - I let them know my point of view and did not discourage them from reading the new stuff if they felt the need, but did recommend they do the library thing first, before they decide to spend money on anything  knowing my friends, I'm pretty sure which way they'll swing)

I haven't found any other group discussing the quality of the new Dune books (just odd things here and there), but KJA has a large following of people who hate his guts because of what he did to the Starwars universe earlier in his carreer. Apparently it took other authors entire series' just to retcon as much of what he screwed up as possible. They hate him more or less as much as we do as far as I can tell.

The fact that his drivel was so bad it needed to be retconned always makes me laugh. Every time.

uh - is this old news? it looks like it's from 1999, but i haven't heard anything yet about KJA being Scientology-friendly:

"Ms. Runyon said the Friends (of L. Ron Hubbard) were not identical with the Church of Scientology. "It's an organization made up of people who agree with L. Ron Hubbard's philosophy," she said, "of whatever religion. There are many members who are non-Scientologists and who support his goals and basically consider him a friend. It includes writers that knew him and military personnel that worked with him. I don't think that everyone is a Scientologist as far as I know." When asked to specify names of Friends, she mentioned author Kevin J. Anderson, who has written novels based on the X-Files television series and Star Wars films."

well there are similarities in some of their "stories", and I can easily picture someone with Keith's ego revelling in the mindless admiration of cultists...
There is more to this though, and as Chig said we have a specialist here(try to search scientology in the board's search engine you might get lucky)

cool - thanks! I'll totally check Mr. Teg's info out. I've always looked on L. Ron with fascination - the fact that he talked to other SF writers about the 'real' way to get rich, via starting a religion, then actually doing it years later! Crazy like a fox. And maybe a little bit more crazy besides  , but still, the man really steamrolled over society and created something that's stuck around, however questionable it may be... unreal. Kinda like KJA coming out of nowhere and making bank on another dude's legacy... and creating another kind of (more specialized) societal steamroller - imagine if these guys had used their powers for good, rather than evil?

:teasing-smokingcrack: GMC drifts into reverie, and an alternate history unfolds in his mind's eye...

A man reads a stunning literary classic, an unfinished but fully realized series, brimming with potential. He contacts (is contacted by?) the family of the original author and agrees to help conclude the epic storyline, but realizes that he needs to step up his game to really do credit to the legacy of the literary great, in whose footsteps he dares tread... taking a few years to read, write, eat, sleep, breathe and subsume himself into the storyline, and working closely with a number of scholars of the original works, he works to understand all of the myriad subtle nuances in the characters, the settings, the multiple plot devices; to grasp the overall scientific, environmental, societal and philosophical concepts; to match the quality of writing present in the original literary classics. As he works closely with the estate of the original author and the many fans, some of whom have studied - in great depth, at great length and with intense fervor - the original works for decades, he releases snippets to the general public, to garner feedback and to reconcile his attempts with the critique that inevitably follows. Multiple rewrites ensue. Many debates, discussions and outright arguments are welcomed, leading to an increased ability in the man, greater connection with the fans, a more refined storytelling technique, and higher and higher quality snippets appear... the family, and fans the world over, grow increasingly confident in the ability of the man to do justice to the legacy of the original author.

A few years after the initial decision to work within this intense literary framework, the long-awaited sequel to the epic storyline is released. It receives praise and critique in equal proportions, but the high quality of the writing and the internal cohesiveness and consistency with the original works is readily apparent, to all and sundry. The masterpiece complete, the man politely refuses requests by younger and/or literarily ignorant fans to continue writing in this universe, citing his desire to move onto other projects, out of humility and a desire to leave, as much as possible, the epic story in as pristine a condition as he found it.

...and then the sounds of multiple cats passing gas startles the GMC back to reality - he rubs his eyes and realizes that it was all just a pipe dream. Without further ado he :teasing-smokingcrack:

KJA isn't crazy enough to actually believe in Scientology, he's just using a cult for networking purposes. He's like the Adolf Eichmann of Tween Science Fiction.

I don't think his ego would let him join a cult unless he was the leader of it

just curious: Users browsing this forum: grandmastercrafter, Yahoo [Bot] ? Never heard of a yahoo bot... something yahoo sends out? or some person? it's all gray and stuff...

Every search engine on the internet has member status on the board. Some use bots to build up their own proprietary archives. A bot is a program that goes out and seeks info. When you see it there that means that Yahoo is updating the archives it maintains to increase search speed, or possibly because a specific search is going on and our borad has content that is responsive to that search. Google uses bots too.

Although they are technically "members," they are invisible until they enter the board to search it, and then are only visible in the spot you saw them.

Green curry - bah! Eat some HOT curry my friend (no, seriously I'm just messing with your bowels  ).

I still haven't figured out why Asians and Indians insist on both using the word curry for utter different food styles. I might as well make up a word that encompasses both milk and red wine.

this thread is now about Chigger's Colon ...

I think Spanky wants to be in the Co$, but they won't have him ...

or, as suggested, he wants to appear to be somewhat associated with plausible deniability ...

on the other hand, as cheap as One "Going-Out" Jacket is, I can't see him spending the money required
to become a Church Elder, so maybe he's holding out for them to offer it to him ...
