Clearly, even God is no longer a fan of Jesus.

I scanned the story briefly while I was at work...what was that thing made out of? It seems odd that a statue could "burn down."

It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained Tuesday.

Oof, well that explains that. I would think you'd make a statue out of sturdier stuff.

I guess the frame appears to be somewhat intact. They could always rebuild.

the world's a funny place ... I wouldn't've given a damn about that,
save for seeing your photo here ... now, I feel kinda sad ... I'm a
big landmark-guy, and the longer something like that is around, the
closer it moves to an historic locale ... f'instance if, for whatever
reason, a bad batch of Evan Williams, peyote, too-strong bindweed tea,
I ended up in Ohio, I would've had to go see the TouchDown Jesus ...

what was the damn thing made of ?

at six stories in front of a pentecostal church, I wouldn't've expected poured
concrete, but what, foam over a steel frame ? the big-ass Jesus up in Eureka
Springs, Arkansas is some form of lightweight concrete over rebar ... what's
that one in Brasil made of ?

I think one of the reports said it was plastic foam and fiberglass on a steel frame. Meh. Read: BIG ASS lightning rod!

Not to worry, though, the damned idiots will probably rebuild it. They have their reward. (A pestilence and a curse upon them, even unto the third and fourth generation!)

Anyway, in addition to "Touchdown Jesus", it was evidently also known as "Big Butter Jesus" ... I guess because it looked like it was carved from cheese or butter? My friend who lives nearby sent me this, about a friend of his who
plans to make millions by marketing a low fat, low carb communion bread and calling it "I can't believe it's not Jesus!"

Just saw on CNNj that the church is taking design proposals for a new version of the statue. And that the designer of the original says he would be willing to submit a new design.

What a fucking waste of money. All to bring in people to their (little) "mega-church".

I'm somewhat surprised that they didn't take it a sign and maybe decide NOT to rebuild. Most of the extreme Christians I know are always looking for good signs...

...Maybe God is pissed at you spending people's money to build a gigantic church?

Just a thought.

A LOT of people have pointed out for years that the money used to build the original ($250,000 is one figure I've seen) COULD have been used for something more beneficial.

The church in question is set on a pretty big (rectangular?) piece of land, on the side near the highway, with a long tree- & shrub-lined driveway from the local access road. (When I was back two years ago and we actually drove in and took pix, I got the feeling it might have been an old farm property, but that's just speculation.)

The place that really pissed me off is a Baptist church that gradually bought up all the houses in my grandparents' neighborhood and tore them down to expand their goddamned parking lot. Being fucked in Hell for eternity by priapic demons is too good for those Christ-cannibals.

Some people get so involved with how their church looks that they loose focus on what Church is suppose to be about.

My Church just recently expanded the fellowship hall. The work started July of 2009 and it was finally finished in December. Before the first event was even held in the 'new' fellowship hall I was asked to tell the children to make sure they were careful. ( I was the Commander of Awana, a Bible based club for kids.) A week or two after that I actually got mad and walked out of a friend's place of business because she asked me not to put down velcro tape on the new floor of the extention to our fellowship hall. (We are still friends. I might get mad but don't usually stay mad) The velcro was used to mark a game floor used in Awana.

As we all know kids like to play and the sometimes can get rowdy. I just felt like so many of my fellow church members where putting a building before kids. In fact it was decided to not put up chalkboards or cork board in the new classrooms, which was just for the adults. When people put brick and mortar before flesh and blood then I have a problem with that. Christians are merely humans and sometimes some of them just lose sight of what is really important. And sometimes people call themselves Christians who are not truely Christians.

Yeah, in this day and time that money could be used for better things. But let's not group all Christians into the same mold.

To play devil's advocate, you could argue that having such a striking landmark would bring in more people to the church, which could lead to the church contributing more to "better causes" than they could have otherwise. Even $250,000 more.

I'm with Eyes that not all Christians are like that, and some have their priorities straight - but to be fair, the Christan Church (Roman Catholic) is the worst offender for just taking the money and blowing it on shiny things of any religion since Egypt... well, I agree let's not throw all Christians into that mold, but it's safe to say that that is a very common occurance in Christianity.

It could also lead them to conclude they need a bigger parking lot and they'll rationalize spending the money on that. ;)

I don't "lump all Christians together", but then again, I see very little evidence of there being many Christians in the world. There are a whole lot of followers of the Jewish heresy/mystery religion of Paul of Tarsus who claim the name, of course...
