Could be that they just studied it and came up with something similar, but this is something that was bred and selected for by their prophet, so I would imagine that they would consider it an honour to use the actual gene.
Don't they view genetics as the language of God? If so, then Yeah, that.

I'm still very proud of The Quarry but … let's face it; in the end the real best way to sign off would have been with a great big rollicking Culture novel.

I'm opting for the option that the BT identified the Siona sequence and combined it with their DNA libraries, it's the simplest solution. The Siona gene was the product of the God Emperor so they certainly wouldn't have a problem in copying his handy work and the BG woundn't have been able to assure themselves that Scytale was shielded from prescience without the presence of the Siona sequence.

Edit: for shame.

Not to be a stickler here but I think I might have detected an error.
Do you suggest that only incest makes a true Atredes?
Leto II is gone for good, except for OM. The "pearl" was just that; a miniscule portion of what Leto was, and not a compressed version of the whole. The pearl that the worms have do not make them Leto, or in any way similar to him.

Yeah, I figured that was a brain fart and let it slide!

Well, the Corrinos were distant relatives of the Atreides, too ;)
