Hello

Post by farad'n5 »

Just wanted to say hi.

I picked up Dune in my High School Library in 10th grade, and have spent MANY hours in Franks company.

I was originally happy when Frank's son revived the series, but....Well, the books do read like Star Wars novels. Now, there's nothing wrong with that, but someone gave me Paul of Dune last Christmas. But it was not Paul. I stopped reading when Paul had a hissy fit after Jessica (at some festival on Caladan,) failed to appreciate the fall of Kaitan, the Imperial Capitol. Not only had the voice on the page changed, (writers do have an individual tone,) but the character had become unrecognizable. The preacher (sic) in Children of Dune was more clearly Paul than this strutting idiot.

Dune brings some serious ideas to the table, along with an epic story. I love great stories, but over a lifetime, I appreciate the hard work of writing about human religions, breaking down the "lever's and blocks" that make them such powerful forces in human history. In an age of increasing commodity scarcity (and controlled scarcity) we are given a glimpse of a controlled. oddly feudal economy.

There is a place for soap opera science fiction. Star Wars is an example; great stories with character testing events, but beyond the outline of the plot, are you ever going to sit down over a glass of wine (or your intoxicant of choice,) and talk for hours about the motivations of Anakin or Darth Sidieous? But man, the Bene Gesserit? The Guild? Not to mention FH's studious employment of Earth's languages?

So I am glad to find a small outlying tribe where we can freely debate and speak the truth.

Thanks for setting up camp guys.

EDIT: forgot, Paul was preacher in COD, not prophet.
