a good job at last!

I going through the recruiting process to be a video game tester; Q/A analyst. Basically it's proof reading, but in a game...
which means you get paid to play it inside out to check the text for typos or spelling mistakes
I did that a few times before but as a temp and let it rest for a while, and lately i've been trying to get back in business.
I applied for a position with Square Enix in London, now it's the phone interview this week and we'll see.

It's a really cool job, and it took me to Frankfurt, Birmingham and Varsaw, all the time getting paid to do what I would do at home  so fingers crossed almost there!!

Sorry for those who don't care but I felt happy and wanted people to rejoice with me

Awesome, lotek!

I similarly have been put in charge of a gaming industry position.
I am now the Creative Director for Flarius Games, an indie game company. So now I pretty much direct and control all the content and gaming atmosphere, as well as the direction and output of games for the company.

Hopefully, if it turns out well, I probably won't have time to bother all of you.

that's cool!
I think even I have trouble realizing how cool it is to get paid to do that really...
it's like a kid's dream come true, and that doesn't happen so often

I worked for Nintendo, Codemasters and CD Projekt in Poland up to now, so Square Enix (which probably means Final Fantasy online)_haven't signed the confidentiality agreement yet so I can still give details, but after that Top Secret!

Cool bears. I know a few people that are involved in the gaming industry, some of whom actually head the companies. It's always fun playing their games when they come out.

great, then can one of you nerds tell me how to put a fucking door in a wall
in the Unreal Level Editor ? I've done figgerd out how to bust open the levels
in Postal2 and move stuff around, but I can't build nothing. and the website
that had all the modding forums just shut down, like a month ago.

and I got lots of questions about AI scripting ....

I'm not sure I can help you, my job is more centered on correct translation and text fitting the context, technical issues are very rare at the stage when I get drafted ;)
The fun part is when you get the Debug version that allows you to do and create whatever you want in game, so that you can induce the situation where you think a mistake might occur, like a full inventory for example.
(or add a door where you'd not be able to put one)

@Omphalos: I'm not really sure how they recruit their authors, at least for companies like SE you'd think they're all japanese but if I do get there I promise to check it out :)

Good luck.

Would that be Birmingham in the UK? It's a dump.

well it was more Leamington Spa, pretty close to Birmingham though :)

as for the current subject, I have now to arrange a time for that phone interview and see how it goes...

In fact if we have Londoneers here, what do you make of 7pounds and hour(dunno if grosso or netto yet)for this kinda job?

I haven't been back in ages and at the time i did lots of not so well paid jobs so i don't have much of a reference here, and I'd appreciate any comments :)

yep that's kind of what i expected!

I worked barstaff/building sites for 3 years before minimum wage was introduced

(at the time working 70hrs a week in the pub i was making around 200, then with the same amount of hours and after minimum wage rising the hourly rate of something like 20p, i was earning 160!! the bastards decided not to pay overtime anymore...)

Thanks for the info Laphtiya

well it does sound crazy when you say it but it's true they pay you to play!

nintendo gives you some training time on the game where you don't have to produce any workThe first time I did that was for them, and for 3 weeks we fucked around with our Pokemons
some people actually left before the end of the training, they couldn't hack it...
should try factory work to put some perspective in them

£7.00 an hour is a slave's wage. Cleaners earn more than that, mate. You should push for more, the minimum wage is £5.80 an hour if you're 22 or older. Wages in the UK are always quoted gross of income tax and National Insurance contributions, the basic rate of income tax is 22%, and you'll have National Insurance contributions deducted as well.

yeah that's more what I made of it, I mean it's a qualified job and I have a real work experience in that field...
Thing is the offer is also for unexperienced people, so I guess the 7£ an hour is kind of the lowest common denominator ;)
If i count the 37 hours a week figure(+25% for overtime) that makes slightly over a thousand gross a month, and if rents and travel are as expensive as I last saw it, it is not enough

Do you have any idea of what would be the typical wage for this kind of job?

DANG! ... it is at least 37% here and when your yearly income is above some 30,000 the tax is 42% over that part, over here.
