Caprica
Watched the Caprica pilot the other night. While nowhere near as up-my-alley as the BSG miniseries, I found it far more enjoyable than ANYTHING non-BSG-related that sci-fi channel has to offer (sorry Buck Rogers).
Without getting all spoilery, I'd like to yammer about it.
pre summary:
Religious teens are not to be trusted. Caprican homeland security is a joke. Brown people are 'dirty'. Cylons are direct descendants of Myspace.
I really like the Joseph Adams character, and can believe him to be Bills actual daddy. The fat kid playing young Bill? Not so much. Same goes for the rest of the child-cast. Kinda sucky. Daniel Greystone comes across as very apathetic, and will more than likely die by cylon hands before this series ends. Zoe Graystone (daughter of Daniel) is your average unhappy teen with all the answers, and is all kinds of good at tricking out her social networking avatar. She also has a BFF (gawsh, did i just type that, and follow it up with the word GAWSH?!) who is more is more rigidly acted than a Centurion, and will unfortunately play a larger role in future episodes.
This show isnt just about the creation of cylons, but also the beginning of a monotheistc movement against the polytheistic majority. Theres also some gang-land type stuff going on. One scene in particular was ripped directly from The Godfather II.
Terrorism and racism are focused on.
Being set on Caprica, the setwork and CG are minimal compared to BSG, but the FX and cinematography are polished and do give this show a futuristic if not other-worldly feel. No shaky-cam here.
There was a bit going on in the blue ray I rented that I'm positive will be cut from the televised version (nudity in particular).
All in all, I liked it for what it was, and look forward to more, but it doesnt feel the same as BSG, and may turn a few folks off because of the fact. Looks like its gonna be a Frankensteinish my-pet-robot type show.

Re: Caprica
I liked Zoey as a character, and I really liked the gangland element as well. I agree about the feel of this show: different from BSG for sure, and probably will turn off some people because of that. But make no mistake, this is a polished product.
Also, keep an eye on the Sister/Administrator gal from Zoey's school. Judging by the deleted scenes they definitely had her as a bigger character than what made it out of the editing room, but she could be a very prominent character. Good actress, too.

was suprised that I liked it.. the previews made it seem like some Sci-FI 90120.. far from that for sure. I think will be decent show.

Re: Caprica
{catchup - synopsis for the new folks}
as ya'll know, BSG was the first regular TV drama-series thing I've actually
watched in a long, long time. {Twin Peaks may be the last time I sat down to
watch something every week @the time it was broadcast, probably Roots
before that ...}
I got the DVDs as they were released and let them run for background
noise all the time, even now. Waiting for the last half of the last season's DVD,
but I've got all the shows on the DVR, and every now and then let it run to
watch hit-and-miss, still trying to flesh out this plotline they threw @me in the
last part of the series.
{the point}
I'm not sure when Caprica is supposed to air on the SciFi (that's the channel, right ?)
but I don't think I'll watch it. I'm wondering how long they think this will run ?
one season ? more ? do they have several seasons of stories ?
So I'm going to pass, and let ya'll tell me all the spoilers and wait til this first
season comes out on DVD. (Bionic Woman did so well, eh ?)
So I'd like to see this thread thrive with all the details & spoilers - hell, if ya'll
can re-tell the story well enough, I may never have to watch it ....
and isn't Michael J, Fox in this ? how is ole Shaky ? And will he live long enough
if this series somehow captures attention and is good ?
And I saw the name "Daniel" is 13's post (good stuff, BTW, that's what I'm talking about ....)
if this the missing cylon ?
knowing the (rushed, last-minute, not well-thought-out) plotline of the end of BSG,
how much will Caprica tap into that ? Will knowing the travels of the Final Five
add to the enjoyment of this series ? Like seeing Jack's Dad meet Sawyer in that
bar in Australia before the plane crash ? (Will we see Tigh in a Caprican Tittie Bar
in the background, will Sam Anders be playing basketball on a street court behind
the foreground action ? Are these characters involved ?)
I'm just saying I'm receptive, but not on the first go-round.
convince or deter me ....

I haven't heard a peep about about MJ Fox being cast. Anyone?
As to tie ins with BSG characters, I'm not hearing any deliberate plans to do so - other than Billy Adama, of course. As I said on Omph's board, this is a slick, slick show, but I don't think they can sustain an indefinite run. Two seasons. Three tops.

Re: Caprica
Well, I'm assuming we won't be seeing any of it over here for a long time, but I'm not all that interested, either way.
Sure, the promo trailer (all I've seen) looked "slick" and all, but the creation of the Cylons being set just a few decades before the action in BSG and "Billy" Adama's father knowing the guy ultimately responsible for their creation are two points that have already set off my Bad Prequel alarms.
No offense, but no thanks.

Re: Caprica
Mandy, maybe amend to WHAT were you drinking.. to think MJ Fox was in Caprica?:)
Caprica is basically the front load of cylon origin to the BSG series. Derived from the 2.25 hour direct to DVD movie.. the only BSG character is Adama at young age 12-14 maybe?? Adama's father is a Tauren moved to Caprica and is a Corporate Laywer with Tauren Mafia ties.
Has multiple threads, politics, heavy religion thread ( many gods, one god factions, cylon god to develop).
A mafia type thread( the Taurens... transplated from their farming homeworld to Caprica, after death scenario, etc)
High tech thread obviously.
Pretty neatly twisted together to make for a good prequel Series. I agree 2 -3 seasons tops.
If Stargate: Universe is worth a crap, which I dont think it will be, but will probably watch because broadcast/digital Sci-Fi show Offerings are slim this fall, they combine Caprica with it for a one two friday punch.

I liked seeing a very young Bill Adama (Willy Adams) in the show. It was not too bad overall for a pilot. I did not like the fact that one of the main characters is played by a guy that is a dead ringer for Michal J Fox, it distracts me. Yes Trixi from Deadwood is in it and still not too shabby on the eyes. The vacuum cleaner robots annoyed me a bit. I would love to have one of those "hollow bands", they looked awesome. It is funny how Bill Adama (or at least his father) is in a lot of ways responsible for the creation of the cylons... Let's see where this show goes.
