It's the Eurovision 'Song' Contest, the highlight of the year's fixtures of ceremonies of poor taste and high camp. It's awfulness is legendary in the UK, although some countries seem to take it seriously. If you like tasteless chintz and cheesy drivel, then you'll love Eurovision. Personally I can't stand it, although a friend of mine actually went to Moscow to watch it live this year.SandChigger wrote:So what's Eurovision?

Wow. Pop music is powerful!

Oh, I heard about that! I was reading some album reviews a few months back and one of the reviews used the Eurovision Song Contest as the benchmark for the worst of insipid pop music. As this was the first mention I'd heard of Eurovision, I diligently performed a search on google and followed numerous links from there. Wow! Eurovision is so thoroughly corrupted by awfulness it actually makes the Junos look like the Grammys and makes the Grammys look...legitimate! Just take a look at the kinds of songs that actually win this contest. I dare you. "I double dare you, motherfucker!" If there is a text book definition for homogenized, bottom-of-the-barrel music, this Eurovision contest has to be THE archetypal example.

The fact that shocked me the most about Eurovision was how long the contest has been running, yet I'd never heard of it prior to reading that album review (I think I was reading at Pitchfork). It kinda saddens me too, because all this time I could have used the term "Eurovision contestants" as a pejorative to describe lousy bands like Nickleback. But then again, no one here would know what the fuck Eurovision was, just like I didn't know, so perhaps were all better off

The only good thing about Eurovision is listening to the commentator take the piss out of it in a "why the hell am I watching this" kind of way. Another good thing is to hear my father try and defend its merits (based on what he watched of it as a kid) despite being confounded by the awfulness of it all.

Yeah, that one was pretty pathetic. You'd think they'd realise by now that KJA-haters aren't exactly an endangered species, nor limited to any one sci-fi series he fucked up.

Kevin J. Anderson is an author who fucks up every science fiction universe he touches, from Star Wars to Dune to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
KJA is noted for his tendency to minimize some aspects of a universe. In his novel Darksaber, he claimed that constructing the Executor nearly bankrupted the Empire. This is ludicrous when one stops to consider that the Empire was able to build two Death Stars without bankrupting itself.
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Hypatia approaches one.

Too bad he does not mention that sun-crusher thing KJA did for SW...Now that set the Empire back zillions of dollars and they had to borrow from George Lucas...

I think he means that the hack and his buddy would still have written their books if Frank had never written dune. Actually I don't think that's what he meant, but that's what I'm sticking with anyway
