Time travel is very, very difficult to write well. And, yes, most of what has appeared on the subject has been pretty effing horrible (at least what I've had the misfortune to read).

One exception, for anyone who might be interested: Robert Silverberg. He's written a number of interesting takes on time travel, both in short and long format.

In Julian May's Pliocene Exile series, a scientist invents a one way time tunnel to 6 million BC. Pretty interesting.

Check out All You Zombies by Heinlein. I love that one. A really twisty time travel story. Tim Powers did a great one too with The Anubis Gates.

I guess the only time travel that makes sense is the FTL stuff -

like The Forever War ...

Great book, I almost bought Forever Peace the other day. I don't really count that as time travel though. Going forwards in time is easy... it's going back.
