Officially Laura is my girlfriend but as we live together for four years I consider it a marriage without the rituals and paperwork.

my father only said two things about his gender to me
1. males will always brag about cheating/having many girls(mostly lies) and shout about someone getting naked to cover up their awkard points
2. inferiority complex leads to expensive big cars,younger girlfriends/wifes and stuff related to that

so far from what i've seen in life he was right in both of them.

What? How? What? Are there laws like that? Really?

There's a law about that here called(roughly) "known in public", for people who are known to be together for many years.
It affects mostly inheritence etc, not sure about taxes though.

My neighboor who gives me all the books lives unmarried with her BF due to some law complications.

Oh, and Waff, I'm young and don't mind a rich BF.

In some slizzy dating site I used there were always old folks trying to lure young gays who were in a bad financial status. "Backers" they were nicknamed.

definitely happens to some extent in Australia. I know a guy who lost shit loads of money when his 3 year relationship broke up (she was living in his house). Apparently she just left one day without any warning, then he heard from her lawyer. Seems a little long for purely a scam but pretty scary anyway

on the other hand, it is great for me. I've been living with my partner for 5 years and if I kick the bucket, AFAIK she has legal rights to everything of mine (what little that is!) to look after our new little man.
