It (the name) just came to me by accident, but it's so bloody obvious I can't believe it wasn't my first thought. I think I might try to make a bigger batch than I was initially planning so that some can become presents, but still leave me some. The costs are laughably little per bottle, but it adds up, plus the investment of time and storage space/container for aging. Long process.

For budweiser it's not bad. BUT. If you have any idea jist how good real beer is then you'll give it a pass.

and the Lone Star cap game is a tradition, too.

(there's a rebus puzzle on the inside of each cap - I'm old
enough to remember when you had to solve it or the girl wouldn't

what about good ole draught Guinness?

Man just to look at that picture makes me wanna jump on a plane to Ireland(only been when too young to drink, even by Irish standards), and London Guinness is not bad(at least better than the crap we get in France)

I don't know why but I find it beautiful(no I haven't been drinking or taking drugs, not yet anyway)

Too dark for my tast, I like Harp and Bass Ale though.

There are some amazing brewerys popping up around Canada, I doubt I'll ever drink one of the major brands again.

I had Guinness in Ireland a month ago. It tasted the same.

Guinness is actually one of the worse stouts I've had. I remember it fondly because it introduced me to dark beer, but there is a world of better stouts and dark brown ales out there that essentially make Guinness the Coors (shudder) of stouts IMO.

There could be tonnes of regional differences in taste, Guinness sub-contracts out to local big-breweries to brew their beers, cheaper than shipping. For example, I think in Canada it is brewed by Molson (which could well explain why I think it's not the greatest stout).

The one's I've had are from Canadian breweries, so you might have trouble getting them. They're all from small batch craft beer breweries too, which pretty much instantly guarantees better quality than big breweries. My absolute favorite is from a Quebec brewery called Unibroue. The beer is called Trois Pistoles, and now that I look at their website it might not actually be a stout, though it is certainly as dark and thick. This one is 9% alc, and has some flavours that are closer to a wine than a beer. (Trois Pistoles is also my second favorite beer overall, first place going to La Fin Du Monde, from the same brewery). There is also a great little brewery in Calgary called Wild Rose, which makes a Brown Ale so dark and thick that I'd call it a mix of stout and brown ale (this probably isn't quite as dark or thick as you'd like though).

I wish I could remember some of the proper stouts I've had in the last couple years so I could give you more names, but I'd have to be at the store looking at them to remember who the heck they are, I have a bad habit of always grabbing something new off the shelves and not properly memorizing what I just drank!

Of course it all boils down to taste - and because Guinness is brewed by miscellanious breweries around the world, you and I could be drinking very different guinness (not to mention the difference in taste a proper bartender can give a stout by pouring it properly).

Guinness varies incredibly pub-to-pub - and there's a knack to pouring a good one. If it's good it's incredible, if it's bad it's horrible.

I've been drinking a bit of Centurion's Ghost (York Brewery) recently - that's pretty dark.... and good

Guinness tastes better in Ireland, I can't bring myself to drink it in England.

Beer is more a winter drink, I like Ordinary and London Pride in winter, but during summer I just drink lager (girly drink) or cider. Magners pear cider is pretty fine.

A while back they brought up some Bass Ale from the Titanic, what a collector's item!

Darkness really has no direct relationship to taste or style. I used to think the same thing until I had some really, really good ales that were "dark". Now a good porter or stout is almost always dark, but still, don't let the color fool you.

As to ABI making an ale, it's no surprise. ABI actually makes all sorts of craft beers that are excellent, they just never see the light of day. Usually they're used for special functions or events and probably don't carry the company logo anywhere on them. They make no money on it, so unfortunately a company like theirs with all the wiz-bang techno know-how will never be known for their ability to make a craft beer.

By the way, lest anybody is impressed with Miller's "3 hop additions" or "triple hops" advertising campaign...nearly ALL beers have at LEAST three hop additions.

Just brewed 10 gallons of an all Chinook APA. 1054 OG will probably finish around 1012, a little dry. Anyway, this is shaping up as a super floral, hop heavy session beer. Total ingredient cost of around $40, ready in about 4 weeks. Gonna rack into secondary on Saturday and will dry hop. Will tap the keg the weekend of 9/11.

Different schools of thought then, but I'd tend to agree with you though, as i've said here in France Guinness tastes like water...

I worked in pubs in London for a while and that thing always fascinated me, I tried it but didn't like it

(there was one where I caught the landlord pouring back the lager dregs in the Pride kegs as they can be opend/closed at will!!)

Cider now that's the drink i used to have after a few pints of Guinness, but pub cider is like a glorified lemonade to me

Now, I love Morgan, most Vodkas, Tanquarey, SoCo, and Wine.

Drink of choice, though lately has been a Gary Regan with extra ice. But right now I'm thinking of moving back over to a lighter drink, since Cola upsets me lately. I think there's a Sprite version of a Long Island Iced Tea. In case you want to make one, to see what it's like,

* 1/2 ounce gin
* 1/2 ounce tequila
* 1/2 ounce vodka
* 1/2 ounce white rum
* 1/2 ounce Triple Sec
* 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
* 3 ounces cola
* 1 lemon wedge, for garnish

Pour all of the ingredients into an ice-filled collins glass. Add the garnish.

That drink is served under many, many different names. There was a disco I used to go to in Wursburg called the Green Goose (the one the company commander told us not to go to in Friday afternoon safety breifings), they called it "The Green Goose Special". Very original, I know.

I know. Thats not what the bar here calls it, either. Kind of dumb. But this is the universal name for it. Its not my fauly bartenders rip names for special drinks.

That's a crime against beer.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is heavenly, has a nice creaminess to it that takes the edge off the stout and gives it a refreshing finish. I get it in 18.75 oz bottles
