That's The Battle of Antietam to you Yankees.

I agree with your shoulda/woulda/couldas but you can't change what your predecesors did, you just have to deal with it.

And as you point out, we don't understand their culture/politics at all and I'm not sure we can. I think it's this gulf (pun not intended) between us that is the root cause of all this and will be the root cause of the upcomming (or already begun) Crusade(#4?)/Jihad.

...

Fortunately, I was charged with guarding the liquor at the NCO club in Germany while all that was going on.

Not that they didn't try to send us, it just didn't last long enough (100 hours?). I remember being woken up on Jan 15 for a muster call and they slid a desert survival pamphlet under my door. I think "Oh shit!" was my reaction. We went and put our M3 Bradleys on flatbed trains and packed our bags.

But, instead of the big sandbox we went to Hoenfells for training. A giant game of lazer tag between a few battalions.

All of which I am thankfull for. I'm glad I can tell my kids I have never killed anyone.

one of my good old buddies in an Army surgeon, old

was just in Kuwait for a couple of years, said he checked
it all the time.

kinda like a Drudge report for the war(s).
That's an excellent web site for everything military. Good source for field manuals too. I bet most of them are blacked out now though.

anyway, all I'm sayin', all I'm EVER sayin', is that old Southern Saw,
and you've heard it a thousand times:

If'n you find yerself in a hole,
well, the first to do is to stop digging.

knowing the tremendous mistakes in foreign policy that've been
made, and the knowing the far-reaching consequences, let's just
stop doing that for a while. WTF, see what happens ...

All this "pre-emptive" stuff scares the shit out of me.

I'm all for scaling back foreign aid as well. Some 50+ years of aid and nothing changes? Sorry, that's BS. Not even the Vatican takes that long to conclude the obvious :)

When the economy goes bad, companies scale back on expenses and struggle to do more with less. It becomes about survival. Well, we've hit bad times and we weren't prepared for it because our government has been chronically debt-ridden for nearly half a century. Time to cut back on expenses and struggle to do more with less until we're doing better. Simple.

Here I am on the night of the election. My wife found this youtube video. A lady came to the polling station with a camera and told us McCain had conceded.

The Stranger is still there, but it's six pages long! I've got no idea how to copy all that and paste it here quickly, it would take ages.

A buddy of mine's kid is at SMU - they've been using the students to transcribe
tapes from Oval Office meetings during the Bush Administration for inclusion
in the G.W. Bush Presidential Library. He sent me this one today, it's a briefing
of the President by the Secretary of State:

George: Condi! Nice to see you. What's happening?

Condi: Sir, I have the report here about the new leader of China.

George: Great. Lay it on me.

Condi: Hu is the new leader of China.

George: That's what I want to know.

Condi: That's what I'm telling you.

George: That's what I'm asking you. Who is the new leader of China?

Condi: Yes.

George: I mean the fellow's name.

Condi: Hu.

George: The guy in China.

Condi: Hu.

George: The new leader of China.

Condi: Hu.

George: The Chinaman!

Condi: Hu is leading China.

George: Now whaddya' asking me for?

Condi: I'm telling you Hu is leading China.

George: Well, I'm asking you. Who is leading China?

Condi: That's the man's name.

George: That's who's name?

Condi: Yes.

George: Will you or will you not tell me the name of the new leader of China?

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Yassir? Yassir Arafat is in China? I thought he was in the Middle East.

Condi: That's correct.

George: Then who is in China?

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Yassir is in China?

Condi: No, sir.

George: Then who is?

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Yassir?

Condi: No, sir.

George: Look, Condi. I need to know the name of the new leader of China.
Get me the Secretary General of the U.N. on the phone.

Condi: Kofi?

George: No, thanks.

Condi: You want Kofi?

George: No.

Condi: You don't want Kofi.

George: No. But now that you mention it, I could use a glass of milk. And then get me the U.N.

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Not Yassir! The guy at the U.N.

Condi: Kofi?

George: Milk! Will you please make the call?

Condi: And call who?

George: Who is the guy at the U.N?

Condi: Hu is the guy in China.

George: Will you stay out of China?!

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: And stay out of the Middle East! Just get me the guy at the U.N.

Condi: Kofi.

George: All right! With cream and two sugars. Now get on the phone.

Talk about a case of the cart coming before the horse...

Obama's Star-Studded Musical Tribute

Bono, Bruce Springsteen and Beyonce Knowles were among a list of performers paying heartfelt tributes to U.S. President-elect Barack Obama at a star-studded musical extravaganza just two days before he is inaugurated into office.

Millions gathered at Washington D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial for the free musical tribute, with historical readings given by a host of celebrities, including Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Marisa Tomei and Tom Hanks.

Beginning the tribute, actor Denzel Washington addressed the crowd: "On this day, we are inspired by the man we have elected to be the 44th President of the United States of America.

"As Barack Obama has told us, we are not a collection of red states and blue states, we are the United States. We come here knowing that we are all in this together. So we name this ceremony that begins this inaugural week with three simple words that speak to who we are and to our future, and they are: We Are One...

"Music has always been the creative heartbeat of the American experience, enriching our lives lifting our spirits and touching our deepest emotions. Thank you."

In between performances, U2 frontman Bono later dedicated the band's song City of Blinding Lights to the politician: "What a thrill for four Irish boys form the North side of Dublin to honour you, Sir, the next President of the United States, Barack Obama, for choosing this song to be on the soundtrack of your campaign... Thank you America. God Bless You."

The concert, closed by Knowles singing the Star Spangled banner, also featured performances by Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Usher, Shakira, and Sheryl Crow.

Obama, who later addressed the crowd, will officially become the new U.S. president on 20 January.
This is the shit that often makes me feel ashamed to be a film geek. Was Jesus Christ and Elvis in attendance as well? :)

OK.

I definitely could have done without the Rick Warren (if that's his name) and his invocation. I don't know much about him 'cause I didn't pay attention to what all the hooplah over choosing him was about, but he reminded me too much of all the "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" hypocrite Christians I saw way too much of growing up.

Obama's speech was fairly nice, I thought, but who was the bint reading the Vogon poetry afterwards?

THAT was some nasty shit. Anyway, I got a good kick out of the old guy who ended with his rhyming prayer. :D

His selection to give the invocation sparked protests from the gay community and liberal groups, because of his support of a California ballot measure banning gay marriage.

I didn't see that, I've been peeking at the TV in the break room at work all day.

(The OK was to GP. I didn't see the too-young-even-for-you babe pic until just now.)

Um, considering Obama's speech didn't really make any specific claims and was mostly inspirational bullshit (and ignoring the fact that you probably didn't listen to the whole thing from beginning to end, if you listened to any of it at all), I'm not sure what you mean by "lies".

But please, don't let a little thing like that stop you from your dedicated naysaying bullshit.

Well, he's a politician, isn't he? If he's talking, he's lying. However, he didn't even wait until he got sworn in before he started breaking campaign promises... as if he didn't know there was an economic crisis durring the campaign.

But you're right, I had no interest in his inauguration speach and didn't watch it. I had to at least act like I'm working.
