Re: What are you reading?
There are a series of graphic novels of DADOES out there. By Boom! Studios I think. YOu should take a look at those. I remember they did a great job of retelling the story in the book.
But I th ink that book was unfilmable as it was written. Just too complicated.

I haven't read the book, but I agree the movie is over-rated. I think reading the book enhanced the movie for me. Even though it deviates a great deal from the book, it explains a lot of things in greater detail, as usual.Ampoliros wrote:I haven't read the book, but I agree the movie is over-rated. Re: What are you reading?
That's the best book in his OMW series in my opinion which might be because it was the first one I read. I had picked up the paperback on a whim at the airport nearly a decade ago because of the back cover blurb and couldn't put it down on the flight. Liked it so much I went back to read the first one which was great also but I still like The Ghost Brigades the best. The two after that were utter crap to me. The latest OMW book, The Human Division, while having some issues of its own in quality, has redeemed the OMW series somewhat for me after the drivel of the 2 before it.Freakzilla wrote:The Ghost Brigades - Scalzi
The name Atreides was also consciously chosen. It is the family name of Agamemnon. Says Herbert, "I wanted a sense of monumental aristocracy, but with tragedy hanging over them--and in our culture, Agamemnon personifies that."

I'm reading "The forty days of Musa Dagh", by Franz Werfel. It is a 1933 novel about the Armenian Genocide. A novel published by a Jewish writer in the year Hitler came to power and the word Genocide wasn't invented yet. An astounding book.

Just finished Papillon by Henri Charrière. A memoir of his escape from the penal colony at French Guyana. Nothing like the Steve McQueen film.

I've been reading these 'Burton & Swinburne' books by Mark Hodder. They're billed as steampunk-
Hodder is a pretty imaginative fellow but I'm forcing myself to finish the third book. Worked hard
to finish the second book as well. As I said, it's a wonderfully imaginative story but I can't put my
finger on what I don't like. What makes a good book?

Leto II is gone for good, except for OM. The "pearl" was just that; a miniscule portion of what Leto was, and not a compressed version of the whole. The pearl that the worms have do not make them Leto, or in any way similar to him.

re-reading Game of Thrones. After that I'll probably do the Witcher books, then probably a long overdue Dune marathon.

I've been holding back on re-reading Game of Thrones. I hate it when I've read part of a series more often than the rest, so I have to wait until the last one comes out (on my deathbed, no doubt) and then re-read them all.
Actually at this point I'm much more excited for the final Kingkiller novel.

Armada by Ernest Cline. Only a few pages in and there have been a lot of geek/80's references already. We'll see how it progresses.

Finished Armada by Ernest Cline. I'm not as gushingly enthusiastic about this book as I am about Ready Player One, but it is a very enjoyable book all the same. Has several Dune references, both film and book, and many other sci fi/video game references. I have a good case of like for this book, but not love.
If you enjoyed Ready Player One, you'll probably like Armada as well.

Currenty reading, The Peripheral by William Gibson. This one was a slog to get going, took about 120 pages to get into it, story is really moving along now. It's good, a bit scary, and also frustrating.
