Well here's what happened :you remember the time when I got my hand caught in that catfish and got drug up under the low water dam over on Cedar Creek and almost drowned ? It had all started the night before when my Cousin Ray showed up at the house with a prairie chicken and a jar of pickles. Well, we figured that if the ladies down at the church couldn't get the iodine stain out of the curtains over the altar, we'd just have to use a shoe-horn. Back in those days, shoe-horns were made out of racoon bones, but that was before they invented colonoscopies. So anyway, me and Ray went over to Morgantown, which was what they called Shelbyville in those days, to see if we couldn't find a tire to fit his old wagon. When we got there, there was some kinda demonstration going on, I don't guess we ever did figure out what for. By the time the sheriff's boys had turned the water hoses on 'em and called off their dogs, we were already fighting over who was gonna take Mary Sue Parker to the Winter Toadstool Festival.

Forget just the ending: I can't think of a single point in all of Dune where I would describe Paul as "optimistic." He begins the book apprehensive about the move to Arrakis, his life is thrown into complete turmoil by the Harkonnen invasion, and he ends the book with a heavy heart, knowing that he has set a galactic bonfire into motion.

"Optimistic"? Where? It's like The Hiker and His Sidekick haven't even read Dune. And Byron continues to make a fool out of himself by defending their idiocy.
