OK, maybe someone can help me out. For years, really, I've wondered what mix of effects these guys generally use. Of course I can hear the crunchy tube distortion, delay, reverb and the crazy low action, but there always seems to be a dissonance to the sound that I've not been able to isolate the cause of. Is it some kind of harmonic shift/phase of even a very fast delay, I just don't know. I'm not meaning this band but rather the genre.

Cranes:
Formed in the mid 1980s in Portsmouth, England by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw, and named after the innumerable mechanical cranes around the city's docks, Cranes are best known for the childlike, high-pitched vocals of lead singer Alison, memorably likened by the NME to "a beautiful siren being slowly strangled on a spiral staircase of hammer-horror guitars".

I know the feeling, I feel the same way about this guitar (not the brand, just this one model and a couple very close offshoots that were produced for a couple years). It's like crack to me.

Gabrielle era Genesis is rad.
not sure if these were already mentioned but let us see what have I got...
Cat Power. This woman can do one hell of a cover too. And she's incredibly cute, got a total nerd crush on her.
cover of Rolling Stones - Satisfaction. I'm not a big fan of the original but hers is friggin' rad.
Velvet Underground cover
and how about Devin Townsend anyone?
Neko Case
and a little P.I.L.
they are kings of bland mediocrety. I agree with the Dude and the Freak.Freakzilla wrote: Man, I HATE the fucking Eagles.
yes! good stuff!nampigai wrote:has any of you heard of "Godspeed you, Black Emperor!" if you like rock you should try it out. My brother in law recommend them to me, it's like rock symphonies!
Cranes is more good stuff. Also dig the Swans and Red Sparowes.Serkanner wrote:Cranes:

Holy fuck, I so rarely hear his name come up! He's good friends with a lot of my friends, and I actually worked with him as a preproducer (and recorded 2 songs that made the album) a couple years ago. Super nice guy, nuts but awesome, he's a Canadian metal ICON.Harq al Ada wrote:

right on, that is rad. yes, definitely a crazy Canuck and an amazing musician. I think he's a bit of a metal icon in general or at least within my circle of friends. He also worked with Front Line Assembly for a few years which reminds me, I need to upload some to my 'puter.

Re: The Music Suggestion Thread
I know he's huge here, and has a huge following in Japan, but I wasn't sure how big he and his main band Strapping Young Lad were in the US, Canadian bands are often rejected wholesale south of the boarder, we have bands that are literally legendary here that no one in the US would likely have heard of (Tragically Hip, they play stadiums here, tiny bars in the US).Harq al Ada wrote:right on, that is rad. yes, definitely a crazy Canuck and an amazing musician. Re: The Music Suggestion Thread
Brian Adams and Bare Naked Ladies may be why people have an aversion to Canadian music.
There are no boarders for people who actually love music. My Dad is a fan of Tragically Hip but I have not heard much from them. I first heard SYL Heavy as a Real Heavy Thing on Stanford's college station in the SF bay area and was hooked. But from what I can gather most people here are spoon fed music and don't venture beyond what is crammed down their throats by sales people.
This is one of the most influential bands in metal but they can't headline an arena here even if they wanted to. Could be in general that music that makes you think or feel without being overly sentimental or melodramatic doesn't do well in the US.
