Re: Dune Art
The style is strange, almost bordering on impressionism.
I can't help but wonder about his banner colors.

Paul of Dune was so bad it gave me a seizure that dislocated both of my shoulders and prolapsed my anus.

Hey, it was part of the series.A Thing of Eternity wrote:Hmmm.... I think I might have seen that one before.![]()
I've actually posted all those before, he is an amazing artist, I believe those were all commissioned for the covers of some french edition of the series.

I'd certainly buy the books over again with these as cover art, though they don't seem to really match the typical style of covers. (They should really have a Dune art book, or illustrated editions)

Sparth is an amazing artist. I keep trying to buy his book, but they've all sold out. Except the one that got lost in the post

Though his style would probably work better for a graphic novel adaptation, I feel his style would lend very well for live action. It's a good combination of science fiction and fantasy.

I think "Irulan" is fantastic.
There's something about the architecture. I like those ships overhead.

You mean the brunette chick? I'd never have guessed that to be Irulan.Slugger wrote:I think "Irulan" is fantastic.

Reverend Mother Gains Helen Mohiam, the Emperor's Truthsayer, betrayed the
importance of this audience. The Baron looked away from her, studied the suite
for a clue. There were two of the Guild agents, one tall and fat, one short and
fat, both with bland gray eyes. And among the lackeys stood one of the Emperor's
daughters, the Princess Irulan, a woman they said was being trained in the
deepest of the Bene Gesserit ways, destined to be a Reverend Mother. She was
tall, blonde, face of chiseled beauty, green eyes that looked past and through
him.

I would have guessed Chani, but I can't imagine her (or the other Fremen) wearing Harkonnen blue. Can't imagine who's banner the sandriders are carrying either.

Oh haha, Mr. Book-Quotes-on-Call.
(I thought she was blonde myself, but it'd be hard for any non-regular reader to identify the hair color of anyone that wasn't a redhead)
I think the blue was just a motif choice, being "blue blood". The man below strikes me as Duke Leto, but considering the title of the piece I figure it's Miles Teg. The blue is, again, just a choice of style.

Re: Dune Art
Here's a couple more Dune sketches I've been toying with. They've both got a ways to go (color, cleanup, etc.) but you can probably get where I'm going:
First, Here's one of Jessica:

Well, of course I'm kidding. Sheesh. If you don't know who this is supposed to be, I'm a much worse artist than I thought. I was trying to merge the traditional 3-jawed sandworm look with my vision of the God Emperor, while not discounting any facts from the book. This design also makes the "front segment hammock" possible, as well as Leto's defensive "faceblink."
And here's Dr. Yueh. I always pictured him as an old, proper Asian man. I loved Dean Stockwell's over-the-shoulder, leather medical tool kit from Lynch's movie, so I incorporated that. Also, I tried to merge the Atreides hawk symbol with a caduceus on his shoulder.

I don't recommend anyone drink their thigh pad water. It tastes really bad, like ass and dirt.

From what I can make out they look good, could you possibly adjust the contrast quite a bit though? Very hard to make out.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought he should at least look somewhat Asian with a name like that.RedHeadKevin wrote:And here's Dr. Yueh. I always pictured him as an old, proper Asian man.

I never really thought of Yueh as Asian. I guess I figured that names 10,000 plus years into the future would not necessarily be associated with race or nations that we have today. I always thought of Idaho as Asian, or at least Asian features and his name is not even remotely Asian. But that is why I love seeing other people's depiction of characters in a book. I know what they look like in my head, but it is cool to see what they look like in other peoples' heads. Other than the face, your Leto II drawing is the closest I have ever seen that looked like what I saw in my head. And most likely will be what I see the next time I read it.

I always pictured Yueh as Asian, because of 3 bits of description from the book: It's said he's got long straight black hair, "almond-shaped" eyes, and a "butter" complexion, which I always took to mean "yellow." That, and the idea that Suk doctors are practitioners of many different Eastern healing techniques, herbs and acupuncture and such (from the Dune Encyclopedia,) It just all seemed to click.
That's a pretty ringing endorsement! What's wrong with the face?Other than the face, your Leto II drawing is the closest I have ever seen that looked like what I saw in my head. And most likely will be what I see the next time I read it.

I like Yueh - he's great
Your faces are drawn in a pretty stylised way, Yueh looks fine, but in Leto, though it's an otherwise quite cool and dynamic pic, it's a little distracting...

The face to me looks like something out of that dragon ball cartoon my little brother used to watch. I could be tainted though. Thanks for those three descriptive quotes. I can't believe I missed those. Yueh is Asian whenever I read about him from now on.RedHeadKevin wrote:I always pictured Yueh as Asian, because of 3 bits of description from the book: It's said he's got long straight black hair, "almond-shaped" eyes, and a "butter" complexion, which I always took to mean "yellow." Yeah, the clinging-flesh looks a bit like "anime hair". (On a side-note, that cartoon, Dragon Ball, is being re-cut and remastered to more faithfully follow the book it was based on. Should be a better experience for even all the haters)Idahopotato wrote:The face to me looks like something out of that dragon ball cartoon my little brother used to watch.

I didn't realize that it wasn't hair. Makes more sense now I suppose. Perhaps in color it would be easier to notice the difference.Redstar wrote:Yeah, the clinging-flesh looks a bit like "anime hair". By the way, I am not a dragon ball hater. I just don't know enough about it one way or the other to hate it. I through it out there as the only thing I could compare it with. Please don't take anything I say as criticism. I don't have the talent to even pretend to criticize. I might be able to draw a stick figure version, but even then it would be rather misshapen and out of proportion.
