That ... or they died. ;)

(I did a quick search through Messiah for addict- and withdrawal and spice and couldn't find anything right off, FWIW.)

SC is right, at their level of addiction, withdrawl means death.

But, hey, in Hacky's version of events, at least they died feeling optimistic.

Well...I just did a quick grep of the file for a few keywords; that's no substitute for a thorough page-by-page search. And even Freak has been known to be fuzzy on a detail on occasion. (Once, I think. ;) )

Have hope: Maybe Simon will find it as he rereads Messiah!

(Seriously, I need to go back through and reread the originals myself. Abase myself in ghufran, since I've spent too much time soiled by contact with unclean things...McDune, Dumb Novels....)

I think I'd remember something like that, and I just recently finished reading the whole series (again). I think I would have commented on that in the reading group summaries.

The only events durring the Jihad that I recall was Farok being curred of it by the sea.

Maybe he's thinking of how the Reverend Mothers in the latter books would have spice implants that would meter out minimal dosages if they were captured by Honored Matres.

Dare I ask, but is this the first time Simon has read Messiah?

No, I don't think so; surely not.

It's the first time he's going to read through the books and take notes, evidently.

I shudder to think what will become of this.

Fantomas:

The fremen did evolve. They had evolved to deal with dune's harsh climate. They had longer large intestines for water absorption and also their blood clotted extremely quickly to preserve moisture (which, AFAIK, has not been highlighted as a strong selective pressure on blood clotting thus far)

Talk about dredging 'em up!

Great examples (not that he'll notice your reply, unless he still comes by and has hidden when he's logged in), but not directly connect with the spice, which I think was the gist of his confused OP.

Who knows?! :?

(I always get annoyed at statements about evolution that sound even remotely teleological. ;) )

Have you read that Chiang story yet? Story of Your Life? Tlelology is a big component of that story, and I think Chiang makes it work fantastically. He suggests it as a natural phenomena, not the hand of god.

Haven't gotten to it yet; still trying to decide whether I'm going to finish the Praxis books. (Read a little more last night without getting too annoyed.)

Just combine little maker and sandtrout, combine organic matter and sandtrout excretions and it'll be perfect! :D
