You don’t really think it’s a lack of patience prompting the comments you’re referring to do you? It’s more likely a touch of schadenfreude.

Not to mention the unspoken association between DN and another Dune forum that isn't online right now.

And schadenfreude abounds with both situations. Although it's more vindicating with DN.

Of course, the webmaster of that site was (and still is) an idiot as well.

(and no, I wasn't on staff at that forum, so no snide remarks, please)
A site being down for two weeks is ridiculous, unless there's RL influence.

More than that is just pathetic.
Well, I don't know what RL influence may be associated with DN's problems. I'm just pointing out that the situation could be worse.

By the way, the gaming forum I'm referring to uses vbulletin software. It's nice to use when it works, but horrendous when it goes wonky.

Hmm...all a bit pot & kettle, no?

Speaking theoretically, Phaedrus, would the admin being a psycho bitch count as a real life influence or as just pathetic? :?

Well, if the admin were a psycho bitch who closed down the forum for reasons apparent only to her power-hungry mind, then blamed all the problems on the posting members, yes, that would be pathetic, among other things. Theoretically speaking, of course.

Maybe just a problem inherent in the system? ;)

I think I reread it after finding it online two or three years ago. ;)

By the way, I just checked and saw that Mike has put up a new notice page linked from the homepage:
THE DUNE NOVELS

Discussion Board Difficulties

As you may already have noticed, for several days now we have been having problems with the Dune Novels Discussion Board. If you try to access the Board you are greeted with this interesting error message:

message_die() was called multiple times. This isn't supposed to happen. Was message_die() used in page_tail.php?

Though there are a number of references to this problem on the phpBB website, attempts to apply the various suggestions have yet to fix the problem. So, we're still working on it!

Thanks for your patience.

The dunenovels.com Webmaster
I assume that he is using the current database so no posts are lost when it comes online again.

But after a long enough delay, you reach the point where it makes more sense to set aside the current boardware and database and fall back to a backup and new installation of an older version.

If you can....

I just googled the error message again and got nearly 4000 hits. You can tell from the sample text shown in the results that many phpBB sites were down when the spiders roared through, but if you click the links, a lot of the sites are back up now.

But the DuneNovels BBS remains down?

Ah well.

That's incompetence for you.

Hypothetically speaking, what would you think of an admin who shut down a board to hide the embarrassment of the fact that, after the vast majority of active members stopped posting in response to her increasingly appalling behaviour and treatment of members, the board was dead? Particularly if said board, hypothetically speaking, was averaging two or three posts a week, one of which was from some poor unsuspecting soul who had stumbled across said board and asked a basic question about Mentats which the admin, with her alledged decades of Dune experience, was incapable of answering correctly?

What would you consider the motives of said admin to be on joining a board populated on the whole by former members of said dead forum, should you encounter such a desperate creature?

Hypothetically, I'd call it tragic.

Yea yea, blame hypothetical admins and not others who made them such, all as part of their plans to bring down anti-DN bastions of truth(and if you don't believe me, ask yourself why certain admins tried to shush anti-P&B talk, and not even remotely of the SC type, which I find too strong by half).
In memory of Perach, who suffered and died needlessly.

I wish I could have been with you that one last time.

Maybe it's the wee hour of the morn, but I'm finding this one a bit obscure.

I've always found the HLP's choice of webmaster a bit suss, especially after noticing that Kevin's name appears twice and before any Herbert's in the DN webpage meta-tags—that's on almost every page on the site, mind you. And even his Wordfire site is mentioned there. (When I first pointed this out, Byron admitted ignorance of the fact, but maybe it's something they slipped past Brian, the managing general partner?) And Kevin's wife Rebecca was listed as the administrative contact for the site in its original registration; I don't get that one at all.

But this is just a further example of the mysterious machinations which occur inside the Black Box (of Democracy?) known as the HLP.

And I guess the BBS remains down. I presume Uncle Mike has tried a reinstallation of the software, without mods, etc. etc.

You know what he could do if he was actually a GOOD site admin?

Shut it down and load up the backup.

So you've had a NATURAL boner that you made go down after 4 hours with meth?
